Which Ripken & Gwynn Cards

Ripken and Gwynn each have multiple RCs (e.g. Ripken has 4 if you include the '82 Topps Traded) - how is it decided which ones will be part of the various set registries for Hall of Famer rookie cards?

  • I was wondering the same thing ...

Looking at the "Hall of Fame Players - Post War Rookies" set composition, from 1952 on it has always been the first regular Topps card, with the exception of Kirby Puckett's 1984 Fleer Update card (which I'm assuming was his only 1984 card from a major manufacturer). So by that measure it should be Ripken's 1982 Oriole Future Stars card and Gwynn's 1983 Topps card. But maybe this is where things begin to change ...

  • I believe that issue (On the Ripken) came up on another thread some time ago.
  • Well, they're up ... and indeed it is the Gwynn 1983 Topps as expected. But the Ripken card chosen is the 1982 Donruss.

Anybody know the rationale? Was there a poll? Did I miss a meeting?

  • Hmmm...

There WAS a poll back in August but it was only between the two 1982 Topps cards - Future Stars and Traded - Future Stars won decisively.

There were a number of people who expressed a preference for the Donruss card at that stage. Maybe the decision was taken in house in PSA ...

  • They probably went with the Donruss issue has his next most popular RC after the Topps and Topps Traded issues. Those are already being used in so many of the registry sets that they probably used the Donruss for diversity. I could be wrong though! image

I can only hope that Ripken's '82 Donruss card was added accidentally. I am the one who ran the poll here on the CU boards in August, and the vote was 48-13 in favor of the Topps regular issue over the Topps Traded to be included in the Post War HOF Rookies set:

    CU Ripken Poll

The criteria for the set is to include a player's most popular, valuable rookie card. Topps is obviously more sought after than Donruss or Fleer issues. In fact, SMR for a 9 is $65 Topps, $60 Fleer and $55 Donruss, so Donruss is actually Ripken's third most valuable rookie. I could understand (though would not agree with it) if PSA decided to use the Topps Traded issue, because it is Ripken's most valuable '82 issue, though technically not a 'rookie', but the Donruss card just does not belong there!

I've e-mailed PSA asking for clarification on this issue. Considering the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the Topps regular issue, I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd be upset if this decision were correct, and stood. Stay tuned...

When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • I agree, I think the Donruss is a poor choice as well. It would certainly be great if PSA could explain the reasoning. I don't think I voted in the prior poll, but my choice would be the Topps as well...

They've replaced the Donruss card with the Topps "Future Stars" card, so problem solved.

  • Now this is interesting …

The set composition has indeed been changed to show the Topps Future Stars card. So I dutifully went back to the set to insert the Topps in the space where I had previously put the Donruss … only to find that the Donruss was still there! So maybe the software has been altered to allow us to put in either one and maybe others – anyone want to try using the Fleer or the Topps Traded and see if it works?

The 1982 Donruss would have been my third choice.
  • I sent an e-mail asking about the reasoning, and received a reply back quickly saying that it was an error. Super response time, I was impressed.
