So now that 72 FB is done, I need a new focus.

Hey fellas.

I need a new football set to start building. All of my sets are raw. I'm looking to do a 1950's set, likely in the EX to EX-NMT grade. I know nothing about 1950's football sets. Anyone have a suggestion(s). If you can, provide # of cards, keys, any high series issues, etc. As always, a scan or two is a nice touch. I would like to keep budget below 3 large, if that's possible. Thanks.

1957 Topps is the Holy Grail of football sets. Rookies of Starr, Hornung, Unitas to start and many more. The cards are gorgeous. You can do raw for that price.

57 Topps or the 55 All-American set, both are classics and either would work in the grade/price range you are talking about.

How many in the 1957 set? Any short prints or other expensive cards (besides the stars/RC).

And this may be a stupid question, are they "regular" size? i.e. fit in a 3x4 toploader.

    Thanks

The 57 topps set is regular size. The SP's are the 2nd series 89-154. They were printed about 50% of the first series to the best of my knowledge. You have yours standard stars but the expensive ones are error of Willard Sherman but the corrected is readily available. the checklist is a real bear to find and when you find it, it is usually banged up. There is one more tough card but the name escapes me. Derrow, Darlo or something like that. I will track that down for you.
