<< <i>Tim Raines *absolutely* deserves to get in. >>
I agree....he ranks much higher than all of the names on the list of carryovers aside from Bert Blyleven. I say that Blyleven, Trammell & Raines deserve it based on 'the numbers' and what they meant to their teams.

<< <i>Rickey in '09. Do we have absolute confirmation that he has retired ONCE AND FOR ALL? >>
He's working as a base running coach for the Mets in 2006. Ironicly enough, Julio Franco (47 years old as well) played in 95 games for the Mets in 2006. I wonder how Henderson fealt about that.

2008: Shawon Dunston, Travis Fryman, David Justice, Mike Morgan, Tim Raines, Randy Velarde
2009: Mark Grace, Rickey Henderson, Dean Palmer, Dan Plesac, Matt Williams
2010: Andres Galarraga, Edgar Martinez, Robin Ventura
Here's something to think about. Next years ballot will have 20 guys. 14 hold overs and 6 newbies. Say Rice and Goose get in. Concepcion doesn't and gets dropped for the 15 year mark. That leaves 11 guys. Say only Raines and Justice make it. That puts us at 13 hold overs with 5 newbies for 2009 18 candidates total. Say Rickey makes it and Grace survives for 2010, we're down to 17 possible for 2010. With candidate numbers dwindling like that, we should see many more of these holdovers getting in. The writers know it--The Hall likes having live bodies at ceremonies.

Totally agree that the years without an inductee is like a "Year without Santa Claus." It happened a few years back, and I just have to think there's too much money at stake NOT to induct someone that isn't hall-worthy. Plus, the Veterans are going to be electing (or could elect) at the end of February and every other year, so odds are that there will never be a year without at least one inductee--or maybe once every other decade.
