Who's for the Hall?

Well, with 26 hours to go until the results are announced, this is the time of year when, historically, I get myself into a lather of anticipation and wild speculation and end up snapping up autograph cards of anyone with the slimmest chance of making it.

So, with that in mind … who do we think will actually be elected?

Ripken and Gwynn, obviously (who’ll top the vote? Dead heat?)

But anyone else?

Gossage? Rice (at last)? McGwire???

I’ve a feeling it will just be two,

    Gwynn and Ripken for sure.

    IMO, I would consider them really close, but with a slight edge to Ripken.

    So, I'm thinkin' Ripken on 96% of the ballots with Gwynn on 94%. Something like that.
    * '72 BASEBALL #15 100%
    * C. PASCUAL BASIC #3
    * T. PEREZ BASIC #4 100%
    * L. TIANT BASIC #1
    * DRYSDALE BASIC #4 100%
    * MAGIC MASTER #4/BASIC #3
    * PALMEIRO MASTER/BASIC #1
    * '65 DISNEYLAND #2
    * '78 ELVIS PRESLEY #6
    * '78 THREE'S COMPANY #1

    My guess is that it will be just those two. I would vote for Gossage, Blyleven, and Trammell as well.

    I think Ripken, Gwynn, Rice and Gossage will get in this year. I'm really hoping Blyleven finally gets in also!

    The next 3 years have only 1 legitimate candidate (Rickey Henderson, 2009). The best of next years class is Tim Raines, and 2010's best is Edgar Martinez. No doubt those who get 50% or more this year have a better chance in the next three years. Sadly, for Steve Garvey fans, this is his 15th and final year on the regular ballot.

    I think the top two get in this year (Ripken and Gwynn), with the next 3 years having Rice, Blyleven, Gossage, Jack Morris, Andre Dawson and Dave Parker having great shots to get the 75%.

  • Can someone honestly tell me how anyone could NOT vote Tony Gwynn in on the 1st ballot? 3141 hits and a .338 career average - thanks to nothing more than hard work. Not to mention the fact that he was one of the classiest guys around.
  • have to go with the consensus and say just gwynn and ripken will get in. a shame mcgwire will likely not....but he'll be the posterchild of things to come for players like palmeiro, sosa and bonds.

    I doubt Dave Parker will ever make it.

    He has the drug scandal in his past as well, not sure his stats warrant it.

    Just my two cents.

    Peace

    I disagree that Henderson is the only legitimate candidate coming on to the ballot in the next three years. Raines is deserving as well, though he will probably not make it. Raines' OBP is .385 to Gwynn's .388. and Raines scored 170 more runs. Raines had more HRs and triples than Gwynn. He had 500 more SBs, but only 21 more CSs. They reached base almost exactly the same # of times in their career-3935 for Raines, 3931 for Gwynn (hits plus walks, I did not use HBP). I am not attempting to knock Gwynn, I am saying that Raines was a tremendous player who belongs in the HOF.

    Couldn't have said it better myself Steve! I think Blyleven and Dawson both stand an excellent chance of getting in next year.

The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

    ripken and gwynn..thats it...Rice wont get in....as the years pass, and there are more "steroid Era" guys getting passed over in the balloting. THEN rice, Gossage, MATTINGLY will get in....Mattingly looks better and better every year when you look at the list..in 10 years it will be a bunch of cheating roid heads.....

    mcgwire is not getting voted in tomorrow or ever because then they would have to also vote in baroid bonds, and you know that will never happen

    Ripken and Gwynn no question. I think McGwire will be held over till next year as kind of a punishment. I think he should be elected and even the question of if he should be allowed is kinda crazy. However, since it is writers that elect the players, and since McGwire was THE media star for at least a year, he could not-so sneak in.

  • Andre Dawson may sneak in there as well...........

    I hate to say it, because I want Rice in the Hall of Fame, but I have a feeling that Rickey Henderson will be the next person inducted into the hall . . . meaning no one gets voted in next year.

    I'm not sure I buy into the logic that because there are no really impressive first time candidates that the long time candidates like Rice, Blyleven, and Gossage will necessarily benefit. It seems to me like a large enough percentage of the voters don't feel that they have to vote players in just for the sake of adding to the role call in Canton.

  • Is the Dunkin Donuts sign a Gwynn pun? No. Finally some common sense on the Hall. The Steroids message has finally gotten through the think skulls of the writers. Remember the Bigger, Stronger argument we heard from these morons all those years. I didn't forget their message, nor have I failed to see their about face their doing now. How many times did we hear it "Doesn't help them hit the ball" No sh&# Dick Tracy, it wasn't about hitting the ball, it was about the effect once it was hit. Its pretty obvious now, players were gaining 30-40-50 feet on the ball. It made Palmeiro a medium deep right field to the bleachers hitter. Even if its better late then ever, their now honoring the REAL accomplishments of Aaron, Ruth, Mays.
  • I Say congrats to Ripken and Gwynn. Both class acts and both deserve it the most on this years ballot. I only have one complaint about this years results and everything I say from here on out is just my opinion so please no one take offense.

    How can you not vote McGwire in this year!!! I'm not going to even go into the stats. Here is my thinking on this. I feel that since the dawn of time men have always looked for an edge even if its cheating to win. Look at the rep Ty Cobb had and hes in the HOF. Why? Because he was one of the best in his ERA despite playing a little dirty. I feel every Baseball player no I take that back every Pro Sports Athlete has cheated or used some unfair edge in their life. The ones who never did I say more power to them.
    Point in case for McGwire is he never tested positive and he never came out and said I did the Juice. So its all speculation. And yes he played in the steriod ERA but isn't the HOF about putting in the best from an ERA. I don't care how he did it he entertained me and everyone else if the would get off the high horse and admit it. He stuck fear into all opponents.
    And even if it was giving players a gain of 30-40-50 feet on the ball. If you watched Big Mac like I did the amount of distance would have stop most of his homeruns. I mean the man was upper deck moon shooting them all the time. So that 30 to 50 argument does not hold much water in my mind. The man could hit period and YES he was one of the best in his ERA.

    OK I feel better now I got that off my chest. I hope the voters don't use this to keep him from the HOF , because he is one. Even if they do I know the Vet Committee You know the ones who played against him will definitely put him in.

    Thanks for listening and I hope I didn't offend anyone.

    LOL. I wish I was clever enough to honestly say it was a Gwynn pun. Sadly, it's just a picture I took while in Fenway Park this past summer. I spent that whole weekend eating Dunkin' Donuts and thought I should commemorate it with a picture.
