Dear Bill Cowher: Giants Looking for a New Coach

El Stinko Coughlin can't even manage a clock and save some Time Outs for when it counts.
image

"The answer was in the Patriots eyes. Gone were the swagger and c0ck sure smirks, replaced by downcast eyes and heads in hands. For his poise and leadership Eli Manning was named the game's MVP. The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."

I have ALOT of problems with Coughlin, but I dont see how those timeouts were his fault.

Maybe if Eli and the offense had a clue out there they would be ready to snap the ball before the play clock ran down.

Seems to me the inability of Eli and the offense to manage the play clock comes back to the coaching.

    How so ?

All the coaches can do is instruct the players on what to do. They cant go out on the field and execute for them.

The players are grown men and professionals. It is their job to execute.

Cowher will not be available again until 2009.

Exactly the opposite of the kind of football players Cowher likes. He ain't going anywhere near that team.
  • Bri-I've seen Coughlin flipping through his playsheet while the clock is running, still picking out plays. That's happened more often than it should, you get the play in there quick and they wouldn't be snapping the ball with 1-5 seconds always on the clock. To much motioning on the offense as well, it reminds me strongly of the Jim Fassel era.

Exactly right. If Cowher were to go there (he absolutely never would) he'd have to get rid of 90% of that team.

I agree that losing many of these players would be a necessity. But, tell me, how does just anybody with a keyboard and a net connection think they know what Cowher would or would not "absolutley" do ? How? That is just bunk. The Giants have very solid ownership and are a very even keeled organization.

Hit a nerve I see. I wasn't impugning the Giants organization. I've been around awhile and remember well the Giants vs Bears in 1963 and 1985 games. Obviously the Giants ownership and management saw the same things as I, tis why they brought in a supposed disicplinarian to coach the team. How well did that work? How many false start penalties did they have yesterday? Burress where did he come from and where did he end up? He didn't fit the profile of his former team regardless of his talent level. Some of us tend to overlook that the talent level across the NFL is not much different, but coaching philosophies can be. I don't see many players on the Giants roster that fit Cowher's style, but you are correct enough money will attract anyone. However it appears from what we are hearing that his wife (Cowher) has been pushing him to get away, to move to North Carolina to enjoy the family grow up and lead a less hectic life. How does NY fit into that picture? He doesn't seem to be a NY kinda guy.

I'm hoping that the Steelers pick an absolute loser of a coach and Cowher will be back to coach them in a few years when his kids are done with high school. One can only hope.

Anyway, not that I am hoping for Bill Cowher specifically to coach the Giants down the road ..... this is the first time I have have thought about it. Really it is for anybody who might be open for a job. Just what is a NY kind of guy? NY has had plenty of coaches and managers down the line from all walks that have done very well. The whole NY guy or NY media stuff gets overhyped just as much as NY itself sometimes.

Someone the opposite of Cowher. image
  • There is one thing that is going unmentioned in the media/boards.

If Coughlin is such a great and beloved coach, what aren't any of the players coming to his defense? The guy has been known to be one of the most uptight coaches/individuals around and from what I've gathered, the NY players hate this. If you are winning, then this strategy may be tolerated, but if you are not, then......

Some of the things I've heard on this board that I agree with:

    1. There is no way Cowher wants to deal with this situation.
    2. The coach does instruct players and it is up to the players to execute.

Ultimately, the coach needs to fit in with the culture of the organization. If he doesn't, it would be best for all parties to pursue other opportunities.

    megatron,

I am not at all trying to start a war here, but WHERE do you see anyone mention Coughlin as a great OR beloved coach ?

Nobody I know in the Giants circle of fandome has ever mentioned or considered him as either great or beloved.

I think Giants fans are way too quick on the trigger with wanting to fire Coughlin - he may not be a "great" coach, but he has made the playoffs now two years in a row - with a team full of idiots and borderline uncoachable players. He has a reputation as a disciplinarian, but if he can't control that team, who do you think can? If you are going to keep players like Shockey on the team, it really doesn't matter who coaches them. But, I'd lay off a bit on Coughlin.

    Jerry,

Say what you want about Shockey, but he is the only guy on a team full of stiffs who shows the slightest bit of emotion.

He is also someone who despite his mouth Coughlin had tremendous respect for.

During the game sunday when the call at the goaline went against the Giants during the punt, which clearly was an officiating mistake ( that was overturned and proved to be a mistake ) Shockey went up to Coughlin, lifted off the coaches mic and headgear and spoke to him. I doubt there are many players who could have gotten away with going up to their coach blindly, removing the coaches headphones and talking into them without some sort of repurcussion.

That alone shows that althought the guy has a mouth, Shockey is also known as a guy who will do whatever it takes to win for himself, his coaches, and his team.

If half the team had half the heart Shockey has they would be alot better off.

Many players on the Giants deserve some criticism regarding their play, efforts, and emotions, but I wouldnt put Shockey anywhere on that list.

Nah, you are way out of touch Jer. This team "full" of idiots like you say really is just a couple guys. This team has alot more problems with false starts, holding calls, blown coverages, non existent pass rush, etc that is being comitted by these few "idiots"and evrybody else on the team. THAT is coaching ..... and Coughlin is definately the man to blame for that stuff.

I hear what you guys are saying - actually, Brian you make a good point about Shockey. Watching the game yesterday, I saw the play where he lost his helmet while a few Eagles players were trying to bring him down. Rather than just hit the ground and cover up, it looked like he kept on fighting forward for a few yards, with no helmet. Maybe a small thing, but I will hand it to him, that showed that it looked like he wanted to win pretty badly.

I don't follow the Giants as closely as the Patriots of course, but it just seems like the team quit on Coughlin mid-season. I read an article in SI that detailed the players chanting something in unison after a practice which was anti-Coughlin. He does come off as a tough coach in the media, which may be why a lot of fans don't like him. I just think that given his reasonable success the last two years, you probably need to give him one more season to coach for a new contract. If he fails next year, then you replace him.
