What cards are you trying hard not to collect?

I think it's true for many of us that one of the biggest obstacles to reaching our collecting goals is to remain focused on a manageable few of them and not spread our resources too thin. I thought it might be therapeutic for me to admit a problem and acknowledge the ideas for new pursuits that have crept into my head and threaten to undermine my current goals. Here's my list and I invite everyone else to share theirs.

T205 - PSA graded in any conditon but with good eye appeal
T206 - ditto
1953 Bowman baseball in PSA 5 and 6
1965 Topps baseball in PSA 8
1967 Topps baseball in PSA 8
1972 Kellogg All-Time Greats in PSA 9
1979 Topps football in PSA 9 and 10
1981 Fleer in PSA 10

The most difficult of those to resist really is the 1972 Kellogg ATG -- attractive, small and relatively affordable set with huge names. Sigh.

Great question! So far I've resisted collecting graded 1950's football cards, and I've managed to stick with the 1960's sets. The old Bowman cards sure are tempting, though.

The first set I collected as a child was the 65 Topps baseball...........................I love the set.

Although I have put together a few vintage set from scratch, I have avoided the 65 set.......

..maybe in a few years.........once I start I cannot stop.

Working on '89 Topps autoed set now complete

  • Right now, I just have a few 1915 CJ's and even if I stay focused on them alone, it would take me years to complete a low grade set. It's hard not to be distracted. Probably the T205's would be my next choice. The large cards of the 1952-1956 era are appealing as well. I've considered doing a Brooklyn Dodger set from that era, which was Brooklyn's greatest era in my opinion, 4 pennants and a WS win.

For me it's all the newest modern stuff. A new set comes out an I automatically look for a scarce parallel or autograph set or something that's aesthetically beautiful, challenging enough to be interesting but not too rare or a bad checklist. Several times a year I launch into something only to leave it within a week.

Right now it's Bowman Sterling Gold Refractors. They look absolutely awesome, at least on the screen. They made only 10 copies of each, which is part of the attraction to me, but I'm trying to resist getting into them because a) the checklist has a lot of 2nd and 3rd year cards I don't care about but conversely b) the rookies in the set will go for way more than I want to spend on them. I just picture having all 75 or however many there are, all laid out for me, and think how awesome it would be. Then I think about spending $750 and having 17 of them with no coherency or drive to go further, listings have dried up, and there are a couple deep-pocketed guys who are more intent on hoarding them than I can be.
    WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

    Nothing on ebay

Perez/Steele PSA/DNA autographs. I want 'em all. Don't have any yet, but they are so tempting.

  • For me it's Colorado Rockies game used equipment. They're not worth as much as equipment from other teams but they're so cheap and irresistible.

Most difficult for me by far are T206s and autographed Perez-Steeles.

  • Modern rookies ...........I'm a rookie collector and the prices have been getting out of control. I just want to stick to vintage, but my addiction keeps me coming back for more.

My downfall is anything new as well.

Growing up, buying and ripping packs and putting the set together was what made collecting fun.

These days, packs are so high with the rewards so low, that it's hard to justify buying hobby boxes.

So I've tried to just work on my All American set, which is going very slowly.

And I've ALWAYS got the urge to break down and buy a box of something, have a good rip, and try to put the set together, even the most basic of sets.

I'm currently trying to talk myself out of buying any 07 heritage baseball.

    The addiction continues............

  • T218, '48 Leaf boxing and '51 Ringside. I try to keep away from them now because there are so many of them on the bay that I feel I can grab them later but Griffins, through his enormous generosity, decided to get me hooked on T218. Now I've been checking all those auctions too.

    Thanks a bunch Griffins. image
