Beware of scammers, especially this time of the NFL season

stevekstevek Posts: 29,040 ✭✭✭✭✭
I posted this in another thread but wanted everybody to see it. This forum got hit with a scammer and a member here didn't receive a $500 payment on a bet he won. Let's try to keep that from ever happening again.

<<<<<<<<<< "Ravens have lost 3 straight to Indy...be ready to say 4 straight...friendly wager? Or are you just going to apologize for doubting the juggernaut known as Peyton Manning!"

Anyone can do whatever they want to here and I'm not judging anyone personally.

The facts are that a well known scam is certain people canvassing internet forums, especially poker forums and sports forums, looking for people to bet with. When they win...they expect immediate payment by PayPal, when they lose then they "skip town" never to be seen again. Again...I'm not judging you personally...I'm just making a general statement about avoiding scammers, especially during the NFL playoffs when these types of scammers come out in full force knowing people are more likely to be betting larger amounts of money.

Another way of scamming is through "friendly wagers" - the scammer might even payoff on a few small bets such as $10 or so to gain confidence with their mark and the forum. Then on say Super Bowl Sunday they come in for the kill by offering large wagers. They'll make large wagers on one team with some marks and the other team with other marks in other forums so that they win money no matter which team wins because they're not paying off on the losing bets. >>>>>>>>>>

Nothing against what your saying, but anybody that bets $$ with a fellow chat room "buddy" that they really dont have clue # 1 what the person is all about is a fool IMO.

By the way, I happened to win a $50 bet about 2 years ago and never got paid. You all know the welcher as he is a constant poster here. I will not throw his name out there but he knows who he is..........

Thanks for the heads up, stevek, that's very lame, but not at all surprising...

ToppsCo1lector - in no way, shape or form was this post directed at you. I'm not going to accuse anyone of scamming unless they do it - such as an obvious auction scam on ebay. But I wouldn't feel right if I didn't post regarding a possible "scam pattern" here, based on someone recently joining a forum, making some posts, and all of a sudden bringing up wagering out of the clear blue sky.

There were some other possible "red flags" also but I'm going to keep those thoughts private. This may have just been something innocent done by the poster, and if it was then there's nothing for the poster to be concerned about.

Yes, individually it doesn't even have to be for a lot of money to make some big scamming bucks. Scamming 1,000 people out of $50 each and the scammer has 50K cash - a nice chunk of change.

  • everyone forgets

Peyton manning is 1-2 vs the ravens at home...... He just only got his first win there last year vs a depleted team...
  • The wager wouldn't have been for cash...and believe me I have much better things to do then what was it - scam 1000 people for 50 apiece. It would have been more like - pick an item including shipping from ebay - and if the Ravens win I get it for him, and if they don't win he gets the same for me.

A handshake is good enough as well - I am letting my heart speak on this one because I'd really like to see Peyton Manning win the big games for once - and this Ravens team is very, very good.

And the truth of the matter is it's more like a reaction from a person (me) that bets with my friend all the time over the same thing. He says something like - Tiger Woods will win the next two tournaments in a row - I say he won't - then there is a dinner on the outcome. No harm meant - just trying to back up my prediction.

Completely understood. Frankly, you seem like a good member, with some good posts, and I didn't particularly enjoy posting this referring to you. But I personally would have felt remiss if anyone here got conned and I didn't speak up. And of course they would have felt bad as well by losing their money.

Getting conned is a rotten feeling. Anyone could "waste" money in life doing a variety of things and and even "enjoy" doing so, but getting conned for even a measly $5 everyone remembers that and it leaves a very sour taste.

I don't mind people making money. If someone buys a card and flips it a week later and make some good bucks, I say that's being smart. I could site numerous other examples. But con artists, scammers, thieves, IE those who fleece people of money, have always bugged me and always will. I think a lot of people feel this way.

I say this tongue in cheek, that many in the Philly area would consider capital punishment for welchers who stiff people on bets. At the very least, twenty lashes or more with a whip. image

    Hope you enjoy the forum.
