Best Sports Movie Ever?

What is your favorite sports movie in each sport?

Boxing - Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6) - Loved it - combined the best qualities of Rocky 1 with the action of 3 and 4.

Golf - The Legend of Bagger Vance - Will Smith was incredible and Charlize Theron is HOT! Happy Gilmore is close.

Baseball - Major League 1 - also liked Mr. 3000 and of course Pride of the Yankees.

Football - The Longest Yard - both - but honorable mention to the TNT movie Second String - the Bills actually win the bowl!

Hockey - It's a stretch - but Bruce Almighty - The Sabres actually win a cup!

Basketball - Hoosiers - honorable mention Celtic Pride - the movie sucked - but the Jazz finally get their championship!

  • Yes, I definitely forgot Field of Dreams from the list...8 men out was great...but if I had to vote for the best - I would pick field of dreams. I disagree on the golf movie - if you saw Legend of Bagger Vance, you might think otherwise - and Victory was an incredible soccer movie.

    Anyone see Visionquest?
  • I like 61*

It's kind of a stretch, but let's call bowling a sport and I'll go with the Big Lebowski
  • Math4cards, first you say this in another thread......

<< <i>Another thing is that you act like your choice is better than mine, and that you are better than me - two comments Joe Morgan would have made to anyone going against his decisions. In all honesty, as I've said before, it's who you would pick - not who you wouldn't agree with off my team. It's like those threads about people's best pulls - and then you get on there and tell them they are wrong - it's not their best pulls. >>

Then you say this in this thread.....

How could you disagree on a guys pick for his favorite movie?
This thread is PURE opinion. Deciphering a better MLB player is NOT opinion. Some people are saying you are Axtell. I think you may just still be a snot nose, I don't know.

But one thing I do know is that Axtel's staple was contradicting himself, and you certainly are doing a good impersonation here.

I agree and was beginning to wonder if he was Ax also.

If so, the Yankees avatar was a nice try, though. image

    My personal favorites:

    1 - Field of Dreams
    2 - Rocky (1st one)
    3 - 61*
    4 - The Natural
5 - For the Love of the Game (Yeah, I know. It's a chick flick, but just concentrate on the BB stuff)
    6 - Charriots of Fire

Haven't come across too many movies that involve Football or Hockey that really moved me. "Miracle" was OK, and comedies such as "Slap Shot" hit a different cord with me. I haven't seen "Invincible" yet, but will soon. I heard that was a great flick.

  • Apologies on criticizing the golf movie -what a hypocrite I've become. It sounds very good - I just really enjoyed Legend of Bagger Vance and even named my two dogs after the characters in the movie.

I also forgot Remember the Titans - which may pass the Longest Yard. And another sports movie I enjoyed was Kingpin - now that's a funny movie!

Mine is weird but I have to say the new Bad News Bears. Billy Bob is about the funniest SOB in Hollywood.

    Slap Shot (hockey)
The Sand Lot and Bad News Bears (baseball...I know it's kids, but great movies!)
    The Longest Yard (football)
    Hoosiers (basketball)

Didn't care for the movie all that much but my favorite line from the Replacements

"You don't like it, get the *uck out!" I still use that line.

Quite possibly the greatest movie of all time.

Well, if you're going to include bowling, there's always Kingpin image
  • Baseball - Bull Durham

Football - Remember the Titans (Or maybe Number One - Charlton Heston leads the Saints dynasty to their 8th straight championship)

    There are other sports?
    John Vineyard

  • 61* for the digitally enhanced treatment of "Yankee Stadium" (really Tiger Stadium).
The original Angels in the Outfield (from the 50's) which shows a lot of great stadium detail (also has Leonard Nimoy as an infielder).
    Field of Dreams
    The Natural
    Hoosiers

Am I the only person who found the whole "Rudy" thing revolting? What's the big deal about it?
  • I second Kingpin for the bowling movie. I watch it nearly every time I come across it.

Math, you are forgiven about the blurb, afterall, you know what the bible says about not forgiving................it's against it!

I too like the Remember the Titans, though I like it better when they show it with the extra scenes. I was watching it with the extra scenes at a party once, so I couldn't catch all of it, but those extra scenes added to the movie IMO.

North Dallas Forty was good not only because it was an entertaining movie but it was ripping the Dallas Cowboys. Ha!

The Natural is probably my favorite sports movie.

    Interesting. image

  • What's more interesting SteveK is my post a few posts before yours - the apology - skinpinch caught it...

And as far as the axtell stuff - I have never been on this forum...a few of you have made me wish I didn't find the forum - but the rest of you are awesome. There is probably more insight on this website than in the ESPN work rooms. That skinpinch, even though we haven't seen eye-to-eye on the Morgan/Soriano issue - can come up with stats that no one even knows where to look for them - well except skinpinch.

And I think in regards to axtell - you all must hold yourselves a little too high up if you think people are going to change identities just to talk to you. That's about as conceded a view that I've ever heard. I mean think about it...a member gets booted off - but he wants to talk sports so bad on this forum and none of the other forums - so he fakes his name - comes back just to talk sports again? I love sports as much as the next guy...but not that much.

Obviously you haven't had exchanges with Axtell. LOL

Admittedly, I didn't see the other posts, I just quickly scanned the thread and posted - it's not like this is a topic for deep thought.

Look...the only type of person I truly don't like on this forum are welchers. All others are welcome in my view, so welcome aboard. Don't worry, this doesn't mean I'm gonna e-mail you a Valentines Day message on February 14th. If my Phillies ever meet your Yankeees in the World Series, every Yankees fan here is gonna feel my wrath. I'm still po'd at the Yankees sweeping us in the 1950 World Series and I would like payback! image

  • One of my best friends in a Phillies fan and he just edged me out in fantasy baseball to take away my title. Believe me...I have heard more about the Phillies and Eagles then I ever thought I'd hear in my life. But thanks for Bobby Abreu! And thanks for letting the Sabres beat the Flyers and the Yankees take 2 out of 3 from the Phils.
  • Baseball- Field of Dreams
    Basketball- Hoosiers
    Football- Rudy
    Boxing- Cinderella Man
Golf- Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius
    Soccer- Bend 'em Like Beckham
    Hockey- Mystery Alaska
NASCAR- Talladega Nights, LOL, just joking! We all know NASCAR isn't a sport!
  • That Field of Dreams movie is amazing. My dad died two Januarys ago and it was already a tear jerker before then...now it's almost unbearable.

The movie Hoosiers however gave me a new view of Bobby Knight. In the movie Hoosiers the coach had punched a kid - and yet most of us were pulling for him and his team to win it all...now I look at Bobby Knight with new eyes - still think he's a jerk - but he has been winning games without NBA stars - only Isiah Thomas - now that's coaching. But on the other hand, other players on other teams don't have to worry about getting their butts kicked by their coaches when they mess up - maybe that's truly having the upper hand.
