At the registry luncheon Friday, Ron Guth clarified what PCGS is doing with the pop reports as far as "subsetting" varieties. If I understand what he said correctly, it makes more sense. Here's the way I understand PCGS intends for the pop reports to look in the future.
When you first open the page to see the population figures for a series, you will see pop information on each date and mint mark without separate listings for varieties. Those numbers will include all varieties for that particular year/mm. However, if you click the date/mm you are interested in, a new page will come up that will break down that total number by variety.
Here is an example (although I am making up the numbers). You pull up the Lincoln cents pop report page and read across the 1936 p line, showing 2,050 total graded. There will be only one line, which includes all graded examples of that date. When you click that particular line, it pull up a new page that breaks those 2,050 coins down into subsets, by variety. It will show 1,900 regular issue, 70 Type 1's, 45 Type 2's, and 35 Type 3's. Of course, they will still be broken down by BN, RB, and RD, as well as by grade.
Yes, all of the information is still in their system, we just can't see it right now while they go through the changes to the computer program.
Secondly, as it relates to the registry, there will be some changes as to which varieties are required for registry sets. Some that have been considered minor may be added while some that have been included in the sets may be deleted.
That's about as good as I can relate it here in a post. If I have it wrong, hopefully someone from PCGS will come on and set the record straight.
