Just a quick 7 question poll.

If there is one current player that can break the .400 mark in a season who is it?

If there is one current player that can hit more than 73 homers in a season who is it?

If there is one current player that can throw back to back no-hitters who is it?

If there is a player that can strikeout more than 20 in a game, who is it?

If there is a player that can steal over 130 bases who is it?

If there is a player that can break the 56 game hitting streak who is it?

And if there is a player that can break the saves record who is it?

A properly motivated Ichiro could have a shot at #1, #6. I'd be surprised if any occur in the next 5 or 10 years though.

  • 1). The best batting average player in the game, whos best 162 game hot streak just happens to fall between April-October.

2). Same as above, but best HR hitter.

3). Back to back no hitters...is an extreme product of luck. Take your pick.

4). 20 k's in a game has the best chance to be achieved by the best strikeout pitcher who throws a lot of innings, and just happens to get hot for the game. Take your pick.

5). The best baserunner has a chance steal 130 bases...it is the CAUGHT STEALING that gets in the way. Plus this guy needs to be able to get on a ton!

    6) 56 game hitting streak is best attained by the guy who simply gets the most hits per season, and is just lucky enough to have them spread out perfectly....not to mention a couple of generous scorings by the official scorer image

    7) The saves record will have the best chance to be broken by the closer who is on the team that simply provides the most easy opportunties. The guy who is on the team that is winning by two or three runs the most often in the ninth inning has the best chance.

    1) Ichiro probably has the best shot.

The way the game is now, I doubt that any baserunner will even ATTEMPT 130 stolen bases, let alone steal 130 bases.

  • I think Ichiro can break the .400 record.

If someone broke the home run record I'd guess it was Albert Pujols.

If someone threw back to back no-no's I'd guess some fireballing, robotic arm like Johan Santana.

If someone struck out more than 20 in a game - I'd guess it was Johan Santana as well.

If someone broke the 130 base record it would be my guess that it was Jose Reyes - who took lessons from Rickey Henderson then went on his stolen base barrage.

If there is a player to get the hitting streak, I would guess Ichiro as well based on the speed factor and the fact that he is the best pure hitter in over a decade.

If someone broke the saves record it would have to be someone on a great team based on save per win percentage - I would guess Huston Street.

Thanks for clearing all that up. image

P.S. Much as I love Reyes (as a Mets fan), the likelihood of him ever even approaching 100 SBs is about as likely as a pitcher winning 30 games in a season again.

  • I don't think any of those will be broken - but no one thought 61 would go down...and it didn't for about 40 years. But speaking of the stolen base - look at 1980 - what a year for the stolen base from more than 2 people. You had Rickey Henderson with 100, Ren LeFlore with 97, Omar Moreno with 96, and Dave Collins and Willie Wilson each with 79.

Cy Young won 511 games, too, but you won't see that again, either...

  • Darn right, you won't even see a 300 game winner with pitchers only getting 30 - 35 starts a year. Greg Maddux may be the last of that breed.

Now 700 home runs on the other hand...there are a few guys that could reach that number. Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez (if he wants to), Carlos Delgado has an outside shot, Andruw Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Albert Pujols, Hafner, Howard...many could get it done...but I feel off this list at least 3 will get there.
