1980 Empire Strikes Back grades are in....

I had 252 cello packs of series 1 ESB cards, which works out to 10,080 cards, or about 75 of each card in series 1. So I took numbers 1-11 which are the cards of the key characters in ESB, and hand picked the 5-10 best of each 75. In my opinion, since I trust PSA grades usually without question, the previous cards submitted in this set that got 9s and 10s must have come from a different source than cello. I sent in what I thought would be 8s, 9s, and 10s and got a big surprise.

best part is before my submission, 1019 of these cards had been graded, with only 36 PSA 7s and all of the rest save 14 were 8s and 9s....with 1 PSA 8OC. My submission doubles the numbers of PSA 7s out there, and has more than 10 times the numbers of 8OCs that all previous submissions.....super weird.....best 2 grand I ever spent. ;-)

Cellos are always hard to get good grades with. Their problem is that the cello is bound too tight around the cards, causing slight damage to nearly all of the corners. I call this "cello rounded corners". The problem is also seen when trying to grade baseball cards from factory sealed sets. Your best bet is rack packs.

Double ouch! Cello packs are fairly rare from this set too, I think they only were distributed in fun bags and special sets with the cardboard box set holders. You probably could have done really well with graded packs....

I hope you don't give up!

I purchased a ton of the "Fun Packs" back in the 1982-1983 range and just came across approx 2500 Empire Strikes Back Series I cards as well as 19 unopened Cello Packs that came from the Fun Bags. Ovbviously, no wax stains on the cards and the cello packs are clean. Please PM or email me if interested. I can provide scans, as well.
