The message reads.... ---------- An important part of any business strategy is the regular evaluation of pricing structure. From time to time, we make pricing changes to correct unhealthy dynamics in the eBay marketplace, as was the case last July. Typically, however, we make changes on an annual basis at the beginning of the year.
Today, I'm here to tell you about fee adjustments for eBay.com and eBay Motors which go into effect on January 30, 2007. Let me say that, while we believe these changes are modest, we consider any changes that may impact our sellers with great care. These adjustments are the result of careful analysis and we believe they're the right thing to do to keep the marketplace strong for our eBay.com and eBay Motors sellers.
Core Listing Fees: Auction-Style & Fixed Price*
Fee Type Item Price New Fee Current Fee Insertion Fee Starting Price: $1.00 - $9.99 $0.40 $0.35 Final Value Fee Selling Price: $25.01 - $1000.00 3.25% 3%
No one likes to pay higher fees, of course, but let's face it, where else but on ebay can you sell tons of cards and never have to leave your home. I'm sure the guys that are setting up at shows or running card shops aren't doing any better, and ebay has attracted many collectors, new and old, which has been great for the hobby. Does anyone think that PSA card prices would be even close to what they are now without ebay serving as the main source for most collectors' purchases?

Agreed. I hate the seemingly endless parade of fee increases as much as the next guy, but it's not an excessive price to pay for virtually direct access to a democratic marketplace. I'd love to see viable competition to eBay, but the 5-8 percent cut they end up taking beats the hell out of the hobby feudal system that existed in the '80s and early '90s.
"If any of you can refute the positive impact to collecting that Ebay has had on the hobby I would be glad to listen."

In my ENTIRE lifetime, there has never been ANY factor that has had a greater impact on the collectible industry than EBAY.
The first part of the impact was extremely positive. People were exposed to things that they could not easily find elsewhere; and, prices rose.
The second part of the impact is now starting to be felt, and it is less positive. Sellers began tracking "what sells," and the venue is flooded with like-kind items; and, prices will continue to decline in many collectible categories. (Lots of exceptions, of course.)
EZ-Access to collectibles is now a reality for everybody with a computer and a mailbox. That circumstance did not exist until there was EBAY.
Notwithstanding any weakening of prices, EBAY has been a hobby-expanding savior, and I can find no valid reason to curse the venue's impact(s).
Folks Who Bite Get Bitten. Folks Who Don't Bite Get Eaten.
I'm not happy with the fee's, but who would admit to being happy with having to pay any amount of money to sell anything! If it were not for Ebay, I wouldn't be in this hobby anymore. I found an awesome deal that got me a load of cards for under $100's and got be back into the game. I buy and sell on there. I do think that there will come a day when someone else will wise up and come a long as competition. I say great! That means more opportunities for us. But, until then, let's be satisified that we can stretch this hobby to those who might not have the ability to purchase such rare items that they might want or need.

Eventually another big firm (cough! Google! cough!) will realize that there is serious $$$ to be made in online auctions.
AND
The Justice Department will find some stones and realize that Ebay has been operating as a monopoly - esp. by refusing to allow Google checkout.
Until then, keep grabbing your ankles...
