Bill Cowher as next head coach of the Dolphins?

That was an idea being tossed about on "Mike and Mike" on ESPN this morning.

That makes little sense to me - why would he leave one of the top coaching jobs in the NFL to take over the mess they currently have in Miami? I think Saban left because he saw the writing on the wall, and knew he could never win with the Dolphins as they currently exist.

He will take a year or two off and come back as coach of the Washington Redskins as the highest paid coach in sports history.

Did I miss the formal announcement that Cowher was leaving Pittsburgh? I know a lot of people think he coasted this season after winning last season, but it still would surprise me to see him leave that job. The Steelers don't change coaches every day.

Plus, what decision making power will he have in Washington if Snyder pulls all the Strings? It may pay well, but the job is about as horrible as the one in Dallas". Just ask the great Joe Gibbs and see what he tells you.

As a Steelers fan, I say this sucks a$$. But from what I hear, the Steelers don't like to pay coaches a lot so you can't blame the guy for wanting to get paid. I do like the fact that they don't change coaches all the time. They pick a good guy and stick with him. Bill Cowher bleeds Steeler gold so it's going to be heart breaking to see him coach a team that is playing the Steelers that week.

fsjeter - thanks for the link. I didn't realize he was that close to leaving Pittsburgh. The Steelers should step up and pay the man, if that is what it takes to keep him there.

I really don't think it is about money in this case. I think he probably just feels worn out from the strain of 15 years of head coaching. I believe his current contract is worth about $4 million per, so to say Pittsburgh doesn't want to pay is not the case IMO. And he has a very solid team and program, with one of the best young QB's in the league who will likely avoid near-death experiences this offseason. So it must be he is just tired of the grind...

I don't think it's about the money right now. He was actually offered a 2-3 year extension on his current contract that would have brought it up to about $6 million per year, but he turned it down. Now when he comes back, it will be about the $$$. When he comes back, he will get paid VERY handsomely...
  • On the radio they were talking about the possibility of Cowher going to Cleveland after a year off. This would be assuming that Crennel cannot get it turned around next year. This is being thrown out there because Cowher played for the Browns. I cannot see how he can go to the absolute worst enemy of the Steelers myself. It would be very hard. Miami would have to give Pittsburgh compensation to get Cowher now. He still has a year left on his contract. They may try and do it. However, I think Cowher is serious about wanting to spend time with his family. I think he will take at least a year off. It will be interesting to see who needs a coach after next year. By the way, Cowher officially resigned today. He just had a press conference.
