52 Mantle # 1, who's next ??

Posted a similar query on a different board a month or so ago, the interesting post about trading a collection for the 52 Topps Mantle has prompted me to ask herein;

Which are the most important baseball cards produced post WW2 ?

Most "important" a bit hard to quantify, but the card would be recognized and desireable to: a) the general public, b) average baseball card collectors, and c) advanced or expert baseball card collectors, all three types should be equally considered and weighed.
This is NOT about the most expensive card , nor the rarest card, nor whom the best player was, these factors do, of course, contribute, however are not the only ways in which to rate the most important baseball cards.

Anyway it might be fun, so here's my revised list....

1. 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle
2. 1954 Bowman Ted Williams
3. 1952 Topps Willie Mays
4. 1948 Leaf Satchel Paige
5. 1951 Bowman Mantle
6. 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan
7. 1954 Topps Hank Aaron
8. 1951 Bowman Mays
9. 1963 Topps Pete Rose
10 1973 Topps Moke Schmidt

I would think the 1955 Clemente & Koufax cards would bump out the Schmidt. The 89UD Griffey changed things significantly, and would have to be viewed as important too.

  • 20 years ago the '63 Rose was firmly at #2.

15 years ago the '68 Ryan was at #2.

    Now? Too tough to call.

I think that the 1953 Bowman (color) Pee Wee Reese is a top 10 desired card among collectors. Well, especially among vintage guys. JMO!
