I guess he concluded he prefers the college game. The huge contract did not hurt, either.

With big money comes big expectations, he will get a free ride for the first year at least but then he had better start producing conference championships, big bowl games and most important BEAT AUBURN. image

I'd prefer the college game for that kind of money too

  • He had better run a clean program at Alabama as well, they came off some tough NCAA sanctions in the past few years and Saban
was accused of doing some unethical things at LSU in trying to keep some players academically eligible who were borderline.

Right you are -- they will can his ass if he does not beat Auburn by the end of his second year.
  • I do not know if anyone on this board reads 'Cigar Aficionado', but it had an excellent article in the last issue discussing college coaches that left the college ranks for the pros (and big money of course), only to find the situation to be a very unhappy one. Many return to the college ranks and experience success and happiness.

I am a big fan of Alabama U. college football, they have a tremendous history, and I truly hope they will do well in the future,

I do have mixed feelings about Saban coming to the Red Elephants, he has a good record as a coach, but there must be a bit of a question as to his real loyalty.

Mike Shula had a 10-2 record in 2005, Alabama went to a bowl game in 2005 and 2006, yet he was not retained, his buyout cost some nice money, Saban will cost very nice money as well.

What would Bear Bryant think of all this ?

Dude better not find himself back in Miami ever again. Wayne bent over backwards for the guy and then he *hit all over him.
Payback is a *itch. Add him to the Pete Carroll list of "great" college coaches.

  • tough to be a Miami coach these days....

    Saban bolts from Dolphins today
Pat Riley (Heat) takes a medical leave today
Larry Coker (Canes) Fired a few weeks ago
Joe Girardi (Marlins) Fired after the baseball season last sept

I wonder what Jacques Martin is thinking right now?

So how in the world did he get out of his Miami contract anyway? Were the remaining years "optional"?

I'm probably the only one in the world who feels this way, but I'll never understand how a guy can win a National Championship and return a few years later to coach another team in the same stinkin' conference. There ought to be a law against that. It's like Steve Alford coaching at Iowa, some things just aren't right.

Do you think that the next LSU-Alabama game in the regular season is going to be just a bit tense? image

Don't know about the exact terms of the Miami contract but pro and college contracts mean little these days beyond what the
payout or payback is depending on whether the person is fired or left on their own.
  • Just a couple of notes on Saban's departure.

    1. Funny how people actually defend Wayne H. in this scenario. Mr. "I bought my fans a WS championship in 1997 only to disband the team and sell it" soon thereafter.
    2. Of course Saban is going to say he wasn't interested in the AL job. It was a perfect hedge. Imagine if he had stated that he was interested in AL while he was under contract with MIA and it never materialized. He would then find himself out of a job. Well played by him and he learned what can happen when you do the opposite like Mora did in ATL.

Saban's talent is clearly at the collegiate level, just look at the decisions with Culpepper, Harrington, and the absolutely horrid draft picks the Dolphins made while he was there. I just can't buy or understand the people who are so upset that he left Miami, I mean it's not ok to try to cover yourself while possibly considering taking another job(has anyone never experienced that who is criticizing for doing so?) and does anyone actually feel sympathy for Wayne H? He is the king of being disloyal and not keeping people around because of money, so why is Saban the bad guy? Tell me if you didn't love coaching college football more than the problems he has faced as a pro coach and obviously not been as successful, would you think it's crazy to take $30+ million dollars to go back and coach for one of the most storied football university programs out there? I am a loyal Alabama fan and am ecstatic he is coming to coach for the Tide, and for those not in the know about Alabama's football program, Shula was running an incredibly sloppy, undisciplined team, and that doesn't work at the University of Alabama. That, and as others mentioned, losing to Auburn every year hurt him too.
