PCGS Submission...is it safe to remove the

coins from the capsule and insert them directly into the myler fliper? The reason I ask is when I submitted my AGE 20th sets, I paid the $2 PER COIN for the return of the capsules, and wrote "Please send back all packing and capsules" in very big, bold print across the face of the submission form. Of course, I didn't get the capsules back. I called customer service and they said normally they don't send the capsules back, even when requested, but she would see if she could find some and send them to me. Nover got them.

Is there any possibility of the coins (plats and gold unc and proof mainly) being rubbed or damaged by being directly inside the myler flip?

Thanks.

  • The flips will not damage or mark your coins. The coins much harder.... not a problem. I always remove from the capules....carefully now!!

I paid the $2 PER COIN for the return of the capsules

I don't understand this one. It's clearly stated policy to only return the coin...in a holder or a bodybag. Don't expect them to return anything else. Grading coins is like a factory assembly line process, with few options. You can't expect CS person, Grader A, Grader B, Finalizer, Sealer, Shipper to all hold your capsules and keep them together. They don't know or care. So, what exactly did you pay for?

  • It was $2 per box for all original packaging on the 20th's....I got mine back fine.

$2 per coin? Ouch. That's wrong.

In this thread Ron specifically stated that the original packaging would be returned to the submitter upon request at the submitters cost. I believe that $2.00 per "set" is what was established. This was specifically for the 20th Anniversary Set label and not necessarily for individual coins.

In your case, it sounds like you submitted the coins, not in the original shipping box but, in the original capsules which is a different story altogether. I could understand the confusion on PCGS's part.

    Good Luck!

Correct. $2 was to return all the packaging per set. Capsules included. Got mine as well. When talking with Customer Service, always get the name/time you call and call back if you need to and talk to a supervisor if you have problems. Be polite and accurate in what you state and you will usually get good help.

I would also say to submit in the capsules and let them take it out. Worst case scenario, they charge you $1/coin for removal.

I am getting ready for my first submittal too. You are saying that I can take my '93 Proof Silver Eagles out of the capsule and put them into the PCGS flips without any fear of the flips causing damage? Is that right? Thanks.

Especially if you are sending proofs, I would leave them in the capsule.....less chance of a piece of dirt of something getting in the flip, being missed, and causing a minute (if you are lucky) scratch.

If in doubt, call PCGS customer service and ask.

I never got my capsules back from my 20th ASE Anniversary Packaging. I called and they won't guarantee that I will get the capsules even though I stated clearly I wanted the "capsules" back on the form. The rep says she will try but not counting on getting my capsules back. As for my Platinum W's I removed them all from the capsules and put them in mylar flips like any other submission.

Personally, I'd rather lose the capsules than summit the coins in the flips alone. It's just added "insurance."

After struggling for 30 minutes to remove a 1 oz. W-Plat which was practically 'welded' into a -tol. capsule, I would much rather do the removal myself than have someone doing the task at PCGS.

A-MEN! Those things were tight. The 1/10 ozers were a pain, too. Tiny little guys.

I've got the time and the patience, not to mention the investment to protect.

I had the same problem with a 2003 $50 Proof plat that I sent in. I finally gave up and sent it to them in the capsule. I figured my experience to opening them was a grand sum total of one. They open thousands. Does anyone know how they open them? By hand? Some type of suction gripper?

Oh... here's the result of that submission.

I sent in two submission of SAEs, the first was 18 sets- no capsules returned, the second was 2 sets only 5 capsules returned (go figure).

So when I sent the W Gold and Plats in I removed them from the capsules myself and sent them to PCGS in Flips. I found the trick is to use a really sharp knife and work it around the edges of the capsule until it starts to pry apart. Kind of tedious but once I got the hang of it it went pretty quick. Not a single coin damaged! But I have to admit I was kinda nervous at first.
