NFL MVP Set?

I was curious why there was no NFL MVP set on the registry.

Is it because there are so many different "MVP" awards each year? (ie. United Press, Pro Football Writers, Maxwell Club, AP etc)
Is there no interest?
Is it because there is an intermingling of AFL/NFL for a short time? Could we have one of each?
Is there one in the works and I'm just getting ahead of myself? image

Surely Jason can answer this. image

I really like the Super Bowl MVP set and the newly added 75th Anniversary Team sets. I was just curious if there was any reason we didn't have the yearly award one yet. Also curious about the ROY and Off/Def Player of the year consideration as well. (as if I don't have enough to keep my collecting interest as it is)

Any thoughts?

  • envoy,

at one time I put a spreadsheet together for the Off/Def ROY set...as well as the #1 overall pick set...but never followed through with them because i got busy and it didn't seem to be much interest in them...

    Envoy,

I might be interested. Count me in if you start the set.

If I put one together, do I include the NFL winners from 1938-1946? There was no other MVP award again until 1957 when the Associated Press started awarding it. I believe the AP MVP is the most recognized.

Jason, if you have any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them. You have a lot more experience in putting these sets together than I do. I would like to take a crack at it, but would want it to have a following and be considered "The" MVP set that makes sense.

Here is a list of players and an unofficial list of their cards I would consider for consideration for the set. Most, if not all of these will be consisitent with the other cards these players have in the other assorted sets. HOF, All Time Team, or Decade Team sets etc.

Would love to hear anyone's thoughts on these.

I have a problem with sets like these.

2006 Tomlinson wins the award. So why add his rookie card? Why not his 2006 SP or his "Best" card from the year he won?

I understand the earlier winners may not have a card from their year (Don Hutson etc) and for them the rookie card is fine by me. I just think adding this set it is just another derivative of the HOF Rookie and Heisman sets. Yes, I know Boomer and others were not included in those but my big gripe is the year of the card.

This would allow us as collectors to see more cards and not just the ONE rookie of the modern guys.

I agree, I would rather see a card from either the year he won or the next year which has its stats. Otherwise some of these sets get very redundant. There arent that many MVP's that also arent in HOF, decade teams, all-time and position Key cards sets. Lets try to make it something different more of a challenge.

Its the same reason why I am not fond of the mega sets. Its just a rehash of the same cards.

  • envoy,

I think it would be a fun set and i appreciate the work you have done to get the discussion started.

I would definately participate if the set goes.

I think the guys have a good idea in including the MVP's card from the year he was givin the award.

That way you could have different cards for the multiple winners. The older guys would have to be whatever you could come up with

as some would not have cards from their MVP year.

Bingo..this is the reason I never requested this set. The same reason I didn't create the 75th anniversary team set until just recently(3 years after requesting the all-decade team sets). And only did that because I had gotten 4-5 requests/questions as to why all the Decade sets were listed, but not the 75th anniversary team...Which is basically an all-decade set for the first 75 years of the NFL...

For me, I collect only rookie cards. A 2006 Topps Chrome Tomlinson would be a waste of limited funds for me. I try and stick with the cards that matter most to the hobby, and that's rookie cards. That's not to say you can't request any set you wish to be loaded. But I personally wouldn't collect any non-RCs.

From 1957-present, definitely the AP award is the one to go by. It is the most recognized and "official" award by the NFL. From 1938-1946, the Joe Carr award was the "official" NFL MVP award. From 1951-1956, the UPI was the most recognized yet unofficial. They are:

1956 Frank Gifford New York Giants Quarterback
1955 Otto Graham Cleveland Browns Quarterback
1954 Joe Perry San Francisco 49ers Fullback
1953 Otto Graham Cleveland Browns Quarterback
    1952 No Selection
1951 Otto Graham Cleveland Browns Quarterback

There was no award given in the NFL from 1947-1950.

Personally, i don't have much interest in the set because like jradke stated, its basically a re-tread. With the positive being that you do get to add the newer/modern players who win the award.

    Best of luck,
    Jason

I agree with all these points. However, like Jason said, for me to collect the 2006 Topps card of Ladanian Tomlinson in a PSA 10 is kind of a waste from my perspective, and quite honestly it's the reason I never got into any of the actual manufacturer sets. I don't have interest in the 7th year card of Darrell Evans or Steve Lombardozzi, though I can appreciate the interest others do have. It's just not for me. The one thing I do like about the concept of this set is the fact it's ever-evolving. Similar to the Super Bowl MVP and Heisman sets. You know that every year you'll have another card to add, and personally I like that.

The reason I posted this for discussion is that the football sets are getting a little big now, and all of the teams aren't even included yet. I realize it does have a lot of rehash, but quite honestly every set in there has a large overlap. I think it's hard not to.

There would be a few new names on this set that aren't in any of the other key card sets, at least not until Jason finishes the rest of the all time team sets. image

  • Envoy,

I agree with all points stated by you and Jason.

I further agree that collecting the Rookie Card would be the way most feasible way for those of us who are collecting all the HOF and Key Card sets in high grade.

I also prefer a card from the year the award was won if possible.

Why not have 2 different sets - one for the rookie cards and one for the card from the MVP year (or as close to it as can be found)?

I suppose you could treat it like a basic and master set, or like one "mega-set".

Would that be of more interest to everyone?

I'm just trying to facilitate discussion on the topic as I would like to see the set.
  • envoy98envoy98 Posts: 4,000 ✭✭
Or, here's another idea. I was just looking at how baseball did it and they just have the player listed. So all cards are weighted the same (1) and any card from that player counts. This is how the HOF Player/Coach/Admin set is done although I think someone who has a PSA 8 Jim Brown RC should get more "points" than someone who picked up 2002 SP Authentic in a PSA 10. However in that set, and this scenario, that would not be the case.
  • Envoy

I would be glad to help with weighting the sets if you need a hand.
