Home PCGS Set Registry Forum

why would the powers that be...subset a registry COIN in the pop reports?

I know i'm beating a dead horse here....but... here goes again!

suppose your a Lincoln cent collector... and you decide to do the registry set thingy.

The set in question is......."Lincoln Cents with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1959-Present)"

........you collect as many as you can find...until you get it down to hitting the "BRICK WALL".

FOR THE PRO'S HERE....they all know that the brick wall is the 69-s doubled die ovberse...AND... the 70-s doubled die obverse.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

shift gears now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

all the required coins are listed in the registry sets....and they should be able to find out their populations relatively easy!...right?

WRONG!!!!!!!!

The 1970-s doubled die obverse DOES NOT appear in the population reports!...and if you try to look up its coin number ....

IT DOESN'T APPEAR THERE EITHER!

in fact if you don't have a graded example in front of you...finding out what its number is..... requires more than a few minutes of detective work!

i'm now told that one of the 2 holy grails of the registry set is now a "subset of 1970-s large date"....(POPULATION OVER 700)

which to me is trying to minimize its importance.

The 69-s has its own listing as a variety....with as few pieces in population...and the 71 has its own listing with a significantly larger population.

why not the the 70-s ???

how hard would it be to stick it in there....after all it IS REQUIRED!

I've called...no response...tried Q&A forum...no response...emailed Ron Guth...nothing...HRH...again nothing.

if i found a raw one in circulation...i wouldn't have any idea how to send it in!...or what to list it as.

truly.... all i'm asking is for a logical answer from the powers that be....... to explain to me why there has to be such a mystery on this!

jeez!........you'd think i was trying to start an entirely separate registry with memorials with FULL STEPS! image

    mozeppa,

I came across the EXACT same thing the other day. I was trying to look up the 70-S DDO pop and I could not find it ANYWHERE. Your not beating a dead horse. If PCGS assigns that coin a number (92939), then they have obviously tracked how many they have graded since day 1. Why it's not in the report is beyond me.

According to the pops in CTP's set, only 20 70-S DDO's exist in RD (unless some 62 or 63 RD's exist). I'd sure like to know how many exist in RB and BN. Only the top three sets (the 4th set is closed) appear to have these coins...everyone else is SOL. I couldn't find one set that had a RB or BN version of the coin...so there is no way to figure their pops out that way.

I only see one set IN THE ENTIRE REGISTRY (Close To Perfect) that has a 69-S DDO listed. And I've been complaining about not being able to locate a 63-D in 66RD???? image

I posted a similar question on the Q&A and got a cryptic answer. Wish I could have followed up with another question or two.

Maybe someone could tackle either Ron or David at the FUN show and get them to answer this and the 1000 other questions they have YET to answer. I for one feel the two coins in mention and ESPECIALLY the 69 S DDO are unrealistic freaks for even the deep pocket collectors and should not EVEN be part of the registry.

  • How about distinguishing between the 1982 varieties. They are major varieties, and arguably should be part of a basic set (all coin folders and albums include them).

    Doug,

PCGS's definition of "soon" is sometime before the next ice age. image

The 69-S DDO should be an option for X amount of points.
