What would you do if you found a box of 52 Topps?

a couple points to consider. first, you have to open a pack in order to determine which series the box is. there is no other way to know that from just the pack. second, are they the 1cent packs (1card per) or the 5 cent packs (6cards per). so if it were the high series 5 cent packs, i would open and grade. if anything else, i would sell.

Agreed, at least one would have to be opened to determine the series - then, go from there.

Now if it happened to be 5-cent packs and the one you pulled happened to reveal a 55-45 centered Mantle as well as a Robinson and Campy, well, wouldn't that be nice. image

I would break out a 1961 Latour or perhaps a 1982 Margaux, kick back in the easy chair, light up the Cohiba and live like I had no tommorrow, then I would take a little ciesta and hope I awoke without having a dream, and then I'd start ripping open cards like I did when I was 12 years old!image
  • I would rip them, send them to PSA and add the PSA 8s or higher to my set and sell the rest. There is no way on God's green earth I could resist ripping packs from a 52 box knowing that even if the chances were slim, there might be a mint Mantle or Matthews in the packs. No way.

"I would search for the rightful owner, or the descendant of the owner,
and then promptly return the cards to them, expecting nothing in return
other than perhaps a handshake or a word of thanks!"

Failing in that endeavor, I would have the packs graded
by PSA and sell them ALL.

I would call Mr. Mint, have him fly up here ASAP. Quickly show him the packs and box, locked in a display case on my dining room table, never letting him touch them. Tell him dinner and the wine is on him, have him take me and the wife out for the evening, then let him know that I have decided not to sell and take a cab home, leaving him sitting there feeling screwed over like most of the people who selll to him do when they find out what their stuff was worth.

I just had a bad reoccurring nightmare that """""" I would open them all , get them graded , tell the world that I have them, and never sell them , because they are that special """"" oh crap, then I wake up and realize I in my own Star Wars Movie or possible in a different forum. I know some of you guys are saying , Please in the name of GOD don't dredge up the Yogurt king but its hard to resist. Sonny (calaban7)

  • It's been a while since I have been into sportscards, but I do recall Mr Mint buying quite a few freshly opened 52 Topps that included the Mantle card sometime in the 80's. I think the guy who found them had a relative who was a confectionary salesman and had a partial case of cello wrapped samples stored in the attic....or something along those lines. Anyone else remember that?? I'm pretty sure I read about it in the Sports Collectors Digest when I subscribed to it back in then.
