QB Detmer signs with Eagles

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Quarterback Koy Detmer's holding skills on field goals are so valuable the Philadelphia Eagles couldn't enter the playoffs without him.

The veteran returned to the Eagles on Tuesday to provide insurance behind starter Jeff Garcia and backup A.J. Feeley. More important, Detmer likely will replace punter Dirk Johnson as the holder for kicker David Akers.

"It's a repetition thing," Detmer said in a conference call. "It's going to be a matter of going out, working hard and getting a rhythm with Dave."

Upon arriving in Philly, Detmer went right to the practice field to work on his timing with Akers, who missed his first career field goal under 30 yards -- a 23-yarder -- against Atlanta on Sunday. He also has to get used to new long snapper Jon Dorenbos, who replaced the injured Mike Bartrum six weeks ago.

The Eagles (10-6) host the New York Giants (8-8) on Sunday.

"I'm excited to get back out there with these guys," Detmer said. "It was strange. It was weird to be at home, to make that transition and go into a different mode of working."

The 33-year-old Detmer spent the past four months working in Texas with his brother, Ty, for a financial group that handles real estate investments. He enjoyed spending time with his family and celebrating holidays at home for the first time in years, but missed the camaraderie among teammates.

After Donovan McNabb had a season-ending knee injury in Week 11, the Eagles added Omar Jacobs to the practice squad, so Detmer figured he wasn't coming back. To make room for Detmer on the roster, cornerback Bruce Perry was released.

Detmer might actually have to take a snap against the Giants if Garcia gets hurt.

"I'm prepared," Detmer said. "It would be different if I just came in off the street after not playing for a whole year, but I went through minicamps and training camp."

Detmer spent nine seasons with Philadelphia after being selected in the seventh round of the 1997 NFL draft. He was cut after the Eagles signed Feeley on Aug. 30.

Detmer has started eight games in his career while serving mostly as a backup to McNabb and handling his important role on special teams. He's completed 52 percent of his passes (184-for-354) for 1,944 yards, 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Detmer's most memorable performance came in a Monday night game against San Francisco in 2002. One week after McNabb broke his ankle, Detmer threw for 227 yards and two TDs and ran for another before leaving with a dislocated elbow in the third quarter of a 38-17 win over the 49ers.

Despite losing McNabb, the Eagles went 5-1 behind Garcia and won their fifth NFC East title in six years.

"You can see some exciting things in training camp," Detmer said.

Remember when Koy beat the Pack in Green Bay a few years back? Man, that was a great performance. Just an OT post about a below average QB with a big heart.

How a bout them BIRDS!!! After that drought in the middle of the season, everybody wrote them off...but not me.image
I`ve been a fan my whole life and i`ve seen how the Eagles can lose to any team and also how they can beat any team.
This is definitely one of the crazier seasons with Kearse and McNabb going down and now being in the position that their in now.
I think that this actually COULD be "THE YEAR" that I have been waiting for.image
Lets welcome back Detmer and keep our fingers crossed and who knows........Superbowl?!?!?!
It`s still sinking in, but i`m holding on to every hope and prayer that it may happen.
    GO BIRDS!!!!image

He did they let him handle the extra point and field goal attempts. Guess Reed is smarter than Parcells, oops wait a minute some expert told us last night it wasn't a good idea to have a qb doing that. image

A few, I slow cooked a beef roast for 12 hours with pepperconcini's, italian dressing and had Italian beef sandwiches with the peppers, red onion, tomato and lots of cold Ale. Man it doesn't get any better than that. Panera's bakes a mean French bread, soaks up all those juices which is very important if you have a beard. image

Sounds f*ing good to me. Ya know what makes it all go down real nicely? For me an Eagles win and advancing to the playoffs. I wouldn't give a chit if Rosie O'Donnell was holding the snaps. image
