<<< Dear Babe: The attached 11x14 photo of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig has been in the family for a while. I was curious if there's a way to tell if it is real or not? — Chris Hudgins, Mount Juliet, Tenn.

The photo from the barnstorming tour back in 1927 with Ruth wearing a "Bustin Babes" jersey and Gehrig a "Larrupin' Lous" shirt has been reprinted often. Someone reprinted a photo the duo had signed. Then another person had them sign a reprint (two sets of signatures). Then that photo was reprinted over the years. "The Ruth-Gehrig photo is a reprint, almost certainly from a series of great items reproduced from the Barry Halper Collection years ago that were sold at Wal-Mart, said Robert Lifson, president of Robert Edwards Auctions in New Jersey. "The repo is worth $5 to $10. An original signed by Ruth and Gehrig is worth $20,000 to $30,000 in excellent condition. Lifson noted that originals are about 8x10 inches. "There are 8x10 reprints, too, but most reprints we encounter are the Wal-Mart reprints, and in those cases all we have to do is ask the measurements to determine if it's a fake with certainty. You can take the photo out of the frame and look at the signatures to see if they're part of the print or signed afterward. Signed originals are very rare. A vintage reprint might be worth $25 or so. >>>
