Starting the New Year off on the wrong foot!!

I've got to be either loosing my mind...or just getting old..because it seems like every day that passes..people just bug me more and more!!

That's 1/2 the reason I decided to close my retail store....as it's easier to deal with a sig line on an email and a paypal address...and never have to listen to the dole drums...

Anyways, I closed my store...brought everything back to my house. I have my show material...my online material...and then the rooms full of store excess. So I posted an add in a local trade magazine looking to sell the contents off.

Now keep in mind...99% of the commons have been sold off or donated...and what I did keep was all SPx..Finite...Finest...or other higher end singles. There are some 150K-200K smaller stars and inserts...pretty much sorted out. Like 500-800 and 1500 count boxes of any given player....2400 Olajuwons for instance....800 Shaqs. There's anything from the cheaper base cards..to inserts worth up to $100.00

In this collection, there are some 500-700 complete sets and subsets...and another 100-200 incomplete sets..but all missing less than 5 cards.

So the add goes in for the store contents....take it ALL......$7500!! My guestimate...it's probably close to $90-$100K in book value.

So this dealer comes to the house today....wants to look and touch every card in every box.....looks through the sets and adds the book values in his head....thumbs through 60 monster boxes of stars and inserts.....and then asks..."what's the best you can do?"

My answer.."if you take it all out of here today...it's yours for $7000"
His reply," There's way too much stuff...it would take me forever to sell it....would you go $3k?"

Ummmmm...where do these guys get the rocks to even come up with these numbers??

My answer went something like this:

" There's a 96-97 Finest Master set worth $600..a 97-98 Finest Master Set worth $750...an 98-99 SPX Finite set worth $500......and there's a box over there with 1500 Jordans in it and 100 or so game used cards.....you can have THAT for your $3K...I'll keep the rest!!?

One shelf in my cellar has $10K in sets on it...and he wants EVERYTHING for $3k....

The best part was when he said that he sets up at shows and that he was more or less looking for stuff for his 50 cent and $2 boxes.....that it is really hard to sell anything else.

I guess that's why he just kept scanning the boxes with all the Kobe - Iverson and Garnett rookies....

That's a great start to my New Year....

lol

  • That guy has some guts alright - I wouldn't be able to keep a straight face if I asked for that size collection for 1/33 of book value -especially since you said they were sorted and most of the commons were gone.

But this should also mean if you sold each Jordan for a buck - each of those rookies for 2 bucks apiece - and all high priced cards for $5 and under you should make more than 10 k - why rip yourself off?

Are you in a hurry to sell?

Why not sell some of the nicer sets on ebay?

  • That's my point too...I don't have to give it away...I can and will put up bulk lots on Ebay soon...

It's just a matter of space right now!! My office is FULL with online cards...and PSA orders...along with my show material.

The rest is in the "family" room downstairs. Makes it kind of hard to watch a kid go downstairs with a bottle of soda and a bag of chips...and not have a heart attack worrying about cards!!

Besides...in order to move something of that size...I know it's going to take someone a long time to sift through it....
It then gets to be a battle...if YOU had $7500 to spend..would you spend it on a trucload of sets and singles that will take you a couple years to sell off.....or would you look for something else..less cumbersome?

The price has to be right to fit the right buyer.....that's all.

Why did you let Mr. Mint enter your home in the first place?
  • It would be fun just to look at a collection like that - maybe you could charge people $10 a head just to look through them all?

Just kidding - but if you priced them right and went to a big, BIG show - you could make the big bucks!

I'd be very, VERY interested in seeing what 1500 Jordans would go for on E-bay - any predictions?
I'd guess at least $500 - depending on the cards - probably even more!

I would focus on moving $7500 worth of stuff - then when you hit that target - the rest would be fun to see how much more you can make. A college fund? A new car? Tickets to the Bills super bowl 2008?
  • Eagleeye........I sell to Rosen every year at the Shrines show......he's cheap...but he's like an ATM...always full of crisp bills!! lol

I was hoping to flip this stuff...make some room...and use the $$$$ to grade another 1400-1500 cards. Whatever keep the ball rolling.

As for bringing this stuff to shows...I have been....last show I FILLED the SUV...floor to ceiling.....came back with my showcases and 10 monster boxes across the back seat.....sold 3/4 of what I brought. So keeping it and peddling it isn't the problem....it's the balls of these other guys who want it for nothing.

I'd be ashamed to throw out a number like that...

    But wait....maybe I'm paying too much....lol
