Post a coin in which is the best design and explain why?

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
My vote (you guessed it) Winged Liberty Dimes.

The design is built on freedom, strength, and peace.

The Wings signify freedom of thought.

The Fasces with the axe signify Strength.

The Olive Branch signifies Peace.

The design is artful, straight forward, and one of the most beautiful designs of any US coin (and without a doubt the best small silver US coin).

Please share a coin in which you believe to be one of the best designs, and please share your thoughts as to why.

I think Anthony C. Paquet's obverse design for the 1859 Philadelphia Mint half dime is sweet.

I agree with Russ, except for the flip side of that coin image
Overall, I think this is the most beautiful of all US Coins by artistic design.

I too agree with Russ.... Not only for the beauty of the coin in MS condition, But even more so in circ grades, walkers in my opinion hold there beauty more then any other series in circ grades as well.

I showed this thread to Patrica (My girlfriend that got me into coins)

She just sighed when she saw DRWSTR's SLQ, Which is her number one favorite design, which she enjoys just a touch more then the seated lib half dimes, which she would love to own the one that coinJP posted.

Besides the aesthetic appeal, which speaks for itself, I love the legend on the reverse: "Libre Cresca Fecundo", which I believe translates roughly to "Freedom Increases Productivity".

I would really like to see the mint come out with a palladium coin in this design next year! image

I believe that our coinage should represent symbolism, not sad reproductions of dead people, in poor relief, with spaghetti hair...

    Fcloud,

I thought you might like a poster on artist Peter Max's website. Go to the Patriotic poster section and there is one of the Mercury Dime.

This one (obverse design) - because it looks exquisite circulated, uncirculated, in proof or in reverse proof.

And if they were as affordable (in mint state) as the dimes, I'd be seriously collecting the quarters and halves as well.

All three are very lovely designs.

1916 was a truly great year, maybe the best ever(?) for coin new designs. The "Mercury" dime, the Standing Liberty Quarter and the Walking Liberty half....and let's not forget the (at the time) 3 year old Buffalo Nickle. I think all of these designs represent what America has always tried to be about and they are very artistic designs.

The three gold coins minted in 1916 were also pretty cool.

It's hard to beat the buffalo, but an eagle AND a crocodile has to be at least second best.

There are so many great designs in our history, unfortunately all of the present depictions of deceased Presidents aren't them. Here's my favorite:

Benedetto Pistrucci's St George slaying the dragon:

    image

    a) Excellent neo-classical art
    b) Good versus evil theme
    c) Design enduring the test of time (first used in 1817 and still used today)
