First question is this date doulbed?
image

Question 2: The mint mark appears to have a bar in the center, wondering what it is or what caused it?

#3 Are these clash mark under the neck and right of the head midstream?

image

#4 What is this gouge, dot under the hair curl next to the lobe and is that a die chip in the cap?

image

    Might be a VAM-5 (O/S).

  • Looks like it might be an 1882-O/S variety.

Take a look at the info posted at the VAMworld link below.

1882O/S varieties normally have pitting on the reverse caused by rusted dies and if you look inside the ear you might find polishing lines.

From the looks of the star to the left of Liberty's neck, the star may be doubled/tripled as well.

OBTW Those are clash marks under the eagle's chin.

It might be an O/S in early die state, but the stuff inside the mint mark also looks suspiciously inconclusive... like it might just be junk rather than metal. Can you tell from having the coin in hand?

The dent line in Liberty's neck is part of the design.

The marks under the eagle's chin look like die polishing lines to me (am I looking at the right thing?).

And yes, the date does look doubled from the photo. My VAM 5 shows some doubling, but not nearly to the extent yours does. Hmmm...

    Nice photos BTW!
    When in doubt, don't.

Dennis on the neck I was referring to right under the chin, not the black line as I know what that is image The mint mark has a bell shaped glob of metal inside at the top and then another small blob at the bottom. The coin also shows doubling on the right two stars and there are several die cracks which I didn't snap.

Thanks mad4morgans I was at that site this morning and a couple others. You can see some pitting in the eagle head photo too if you look closely.

The mint mark to my eye and loupe doesn't resemble the VAM 5. Now that I lope it again and look at large photos all the stars appear like the one on the right of the date. The marks on the neck look like a backwards L, strange.

IMike: May be an o/s but maybe not. The doubling seems odd
in that it is doubled on all sides. Not just to the left, right, top or
bottom. Here is an o/s in my possession.

  • One thing jumped out at me when reveiwing your photos is the die crack in the"1" of your date.

Take a look at one of the images for the VAM-42A and see if they match.

You might also want to take a look at the others there and see if they match up.

My guess is this is for sure the obverse die. But who knows about the reverse one?

Yeah I think you nailed it, there appears to be a clashed M over d in God. image Any premium for these, meaning are they worth submitting for the designation?
  • You might check with pm DennisH.

He keeps up with current sale prices and publishes them in his VAMview newletter.

The 42A is an R-6 coin so it would seem to be pretty desirable to VAMmers!! imageimage

Wish I could help with the value question, but I have zero previous transaction records for an 1882-O VAM 42A.
    When in doubt, don't.
