Cool, I'll have to check that out. I saw a show on the production of coins and paper money on Modern Marvels on the History channel some time back.

The big secret, is when we are

    gonna get our platinum sets?
There once was a place called
    Camelotimage
  • This is better than the Modern Marvels show.

The access the producers got from the Mint was incredible. It got me hooked back in the spring to get back into collecting.

It will be shown again on Jan. 2 @ 1:00 PM ESTimage
  • It repeats again at 1:00am CST for those who missed it. image

I think even bear would have
    enjoyed this program...image
  • When I listen to him just say 'they made only 11,000 of these coins, a tiny amount by Mint standards' I got goose bumps!

Wow! I suppose 2,500 coins is a teenie-weenie amount by Mint standards!

Silver Proofs (90%) took 40 tons of pressure and (2) strikes.

Gold Proofs took 140 tons of pressure and (3) strikes.

Platinum Proofs need 200 tons of pressure and (5) Strikes.

At the rate they were going you could easily see how they kept production of this third series of Plats down.

Great show! Anyone see themselves at the auctions?
  • Missed it, will there be another showing?

Where's Laura... Fred Weinberg is on......image.....Wow! NO platinum coins for me...they are heavier than gold and because the metal is so dense they have to be struck 7 times!...I'm not gonna risk a hernia carrying these things around in unopened boxes...image
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever
