Nice work Greg. Are those SI for kids the kind that are perforated/rip outs? If so, nice work on them.

Yep - the SI are tear outs as is the 1990 British Petroleum. The highest I've rec'd on a tear out before is an 8...so I'm pretty darn happy.

    Greg,

Great submission! I hope I get the same grader! I have 110 different Marino's in right now. If I ever financaily recover from the holidays I might be interested in some of your doubles. Congrats again! image

Greg - I have been looking at your 1959 Topps football set on the registry. That is a great set now and will be really something when you finish. I recently bought a bunch of late 50's and early 60's football cards. The bulk are 59 Topps - 60 Topps - and 61 Fleer. There are some really nice looking cards - I hope to get a few 9's out of them and feel there will be quite a few 8's.
My main question is the puzzle on the back. How does PSA consider that in grading? Some of these have had the puzzle rubbed but then a few the puzzle appears to maybe have "come to the surface" for lack of a better description - on it's own.
Some of these have the typical centering problems but I will probably grade them anyway. I can't throw a pristine card with four sharp corners back in the box just because it is OC. My waste of money I guess but they can sit in my collection and I will enjoy looking at them along with the others.
Also on the backs - some of these are dark like maybe from sunlight although these were in a box in a closet since about 1964 I was told. Some of the backs also have a "dirty" look like the wax from the other cards may have rubbed off on them and yet the fronts are really nice.
Thanks for the info if you have the time. Rick

Nice submission on the Marinos Greg!

As for the 1959's that HECK55 was asking about,
    I haven't submitted any 1959's for a few years, but here's what I recall from when I did :

puzzle appears to maybe have "come to the surface" on it's own = no downgrade by PSA for this.

puzzle rubbed = depends on if it was very, very lightly rubbed or the paper actually got scratched up.

backs a little dark like maybe from sunlight = no downgrade by PSA for this.

backs have a "dirty" look from the wax from other cards = will probably get a "Stain" qualifier.

    Any differing opinions?

Thanks for sharing your experience on these. The 59's or maybe the early football seem to have some problems that are not as common on similar years of baseball. Thanks - - - Rick H.

    Rick,

Thank you very much - the 1959 set was the first PSA graded set that I've seriously worked on (although I've tapered off lately) and is still one of my favorites. That sounds like quite a find that you made.....I could only dream of finding a lot like you've described.

I've found PSA to be very lenient on the back puzzle to be honest. As Wulfy alluded to, unless the puzzle was scratched off vigorously, it shouldn't effect the grade. I have some 59's that have crisp white borders/back and some that appear "dirty". Once again, unless the "dirty" appearance is really a stain it should effect the grade too badly although it may prevent some 8's from being 9's.

Good luck and let us know how your grades turn out.

    Regards,

    Greg M.

Do you have a method for tearing them out by hand or do you cut them?

Greg - Thanks for the information. I sent 8 of the 59's in Nov. 30 with a bunch of other cards and then 30 more football cards from the group I bought. There are only 2 59's in that and 2 1960 Topps, 4 1961 Topps and 22 1961 Fleer FB. The rest were baseball. I'll wait and see how they turn out. Thanks - - - Rick H. (the 30 were part of a late Dec. submission)
