How is a rare coin like the 1913 Liberty Head nickel transported to Auction?

For security reasons I would suggest that this question not be answered. The bad guys might be watching.

I'd stick it in my pocket and walk it in myself, telling nobody. Seriously, is's so ludicrously dumb that nobody would even think that I'd do it so I'd be totally safe. Bonus points for driving a crappy car. Of course, I'd keep my hand in that pocket the entire time.

Duh!! Any crook with the smarts to try to snatch it already knows most of the ways. I think sending it with someone totally innocent looking might be the way to go, but I expect that Brinks will be doin the haulin.

Ask her why an otherwise worthless piece of paper marked $100 Federal Reserve is worth $100 to everyone - even though it is backed up by nothing and is factually worthless.

If 95% of people believe in it, regardless of the facts - it becomes "truth".

It's the same thing, belief is reality.

So if a 2 cent piece of cloth is worth $100, why can't 5 cents worth of nickel and copper be worth $6 million?

  • It seems so ironic to me. I used to work at the Mich State Bookstore, and one time, as a student, (with guards dressed casually as students) had over $200,000 cash in a box labled (Math 101 or whatever) on a dolly to take to the store for used book buybacks. Why would anyone have any idea that in that box of hundreds carrying books, there was $200k cash in it??? The two guards were not needed, if they knew they could trust me. image

If I had two guards dressed as they usually are on each side of me, and I was carrying a briefcase with chains and locks, would not others then THINK I WAS CARRYING SOMETHING OF VALUE???

Get a trusted friend or hire a "casually dressed" person to move the 1913 nickel - no one would have a clue. i could move 10 1933 double eagles across the country, and no one would know I even had them.

This kinda reminds me of how it is getting more unsafe for dealers at big coin shows, carrying around those big briefcases. With the Mint and all it's silver and gold products, and the press writing about coins, more professional thieves are gonna go after the obvious - those giant briefcases.

If you are doing a "one-shot" transfer, the odds of having a problem are extremely slim. But, if you are in the business of moving things around, that changes the equation considerably.

As in the example above, if the odd collector was exhibiting a multi-million dollar coin (UHR $20 or whatever), no one would notice. But when you have armed guards, etc. transporting an eight-figure collection I'd actually be more concerned about that situation.

LOL. Back in '81 when I recovered the Linderman 1804 dollar out at ANACS, when the FBI agent finally showed up we (the agent, Ed Fleischman, Ed Rochette and myself) retired to Rochette's office so the agent could take our statements. After showing the agent what the fuss was all about, I kept the coin out for another fifteen minutes or so, carefully fondling it by the edge to admire it once again. When I was done, I put it back in a poly sleeve, put it in a flip and slipped it into my shirt pocket for safekeeping.

About ten minutes later, nobody having gotten up and left the room in the meantime, the agent turned to me and suddenly noticed that the coin was no longer in plain sight. He half shouted "Where's the coin?" so I took it out of my pocket and handed it to him. He was absolutely stunned. He said "You'd put a coin like that in your pocket???" I said "Of course. That way I know it's safe." He just shook his head.

I can remember some one on this board said"I bought a million dollar coin and put it in the trunk of my car ,then played 18 holes of golf".

Sounds like some thing I would do except,I don't play golf.image

I really don't get curious about how valuable coins are moved around. If I had one, I'd be curious to know how to move it around in case I had to do it.

I've never really thought of it before, myself. If I were, though, I would go with the way tossed out so far.......get a trusted friend/employee and 1 other person (armed and trained) who doesn't look like security.
Let them carry it in person, quietly and discretely while I go a different route and meet up, in a backroom, at the destination. Never be seen together in a coin venue and all is good.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
