1854 Large Cent

Practicing with my scanner today trying to figure out how to scan some copper. Picked this up earlier in December at a coin show in raw condition, it was labeled with N-23 R-2, but I mainly got it because it has the color I'm going for in my set. Feel free to guess the grade as I'm curious how the group's opinion compares with the dealer's.

    All glory is fleeting.
  • Thanks for the input. It was marked as a VF-25, but I thought it was more like a F. I was aware of the rim dings on the reverse, but have seen much worse specimens (ding-wise and surface-wise) selling for more money when most of the dates that are not varieties are selling at about the same price when in the similar grades. I don't think a bad purchase for $16, especially since I'm not trying to make $ off of it.

291fifth is always very hard on coins, he must be a EAC member. I would grade it VF easily. Nice coin, rim dings are very minimal. He and I would probably grade it the same VALUE, but he's more conservative than I.

All Large Cents are varieties. They will all have either a Sheldon or Newcomb variety Number.
Not a bad purchase for $16 at all!

I never gave it a thought, but that does make sense. I was thinking varieties more in terms of the Red Book overdates, etc., in this series. The 1854 has no varieties listed in the Red Book, and I have not yet had the opportunity to read other resources.
  • In addition to dates, the Red Book lists some of the major subtypes and styles of Red Book collectable Large Cents - varieties, as Edscoin notes would either be Sheldon ( classified by) for the early dates or Newcomb ( classified by) for the middle and lates dates. Varieties by definition, are assigned a specific number to represent a unique die marriage of an obverse and reverse die and hence the coins produced by that pair-up. You will typically find the Sheldon and Newcomb varieties listed any any specific reference devoted to large or half cents.
