Okay, a real answer. ICG PR70's bring about the same as PCGS PR69's. In this case, that's about $35.

Not sure, but based on the pop of 29, I'd guess it would be in the $1500 range.

Geez, I was way off. The last one to sell on Teletrade, (last month), brought $2600 plus the juice. The one before that, also last month, brought $2800 plus the juice.

Man oh man, I thought I really had something here....my local dealer paid $10.00 for it and when I saw it was a Proof 70 DCAM I thought with all talk on the boards I thought I would buy it and thought I really stole it. How can there be that much difference between an ICG and PCGS ($38 to $2600)...come on now.image

Because ICG has a well earned lousy reputation for grading moderns.

If you are in it for making money then I strongly suggest you take that sort of money and buy precious metals stocks.

If you've owned the coin since 1991 and enjoyed looking at it every now and then, I'd say that for $1 a year (plus, of course, your opportunity cost of $50) you've gotten your moneys worth, if you are a collector. Have you enjoyed looking at it every now and then?

I am sure I will enjoy it but will probably sell it to the first person who wants it for $40.

    Bidask,

Just wondering, why did you buy that coin in the first place? While it is certainly possible to make money on buying and selling coins if you are just a Joe Blow collector(and big money at that), the odds are stacked against you compared to professional dealers. Unless you are either (A) a professional dealer or (B) buying and selling solely within a niche that you know very well, you are likely to have your financial clock cleaned in a very short period of time buying modern stuff on the secondary market and hoping to make a profit. Considering that you, "just bought it", if you sell it at $40 you are taking a 20% loss in a very short period of time. By the way, I'll be the first to admit that I had my #ss waxed when I first started buying rare coins in the late 1980's as an investment. It was only when I started to sit back and learn about coins and then buy what I thought was attractive that I started to do well financially with coins, and even then, in general, I've sat on the coins I've owned quite some time because I've enjoyed owning them.

REMEMBER THERE IS A REASON WHY PEOPLE ADVISE YOU TO ONLY USE DISPOSABLE INCOME ON PURCHASING COINS!!!

ICG is hit or miss with moderns.

Don't feel bad, you could have bought a SGS PR70!
WTB: Eric Plunk cards, jersey (signed or unsigned), and autographs. Basically anything related to him

Positive BST: WhiteThunder (x2), Ajaan, onefasttalon, mirabela, Wizard1, cucamongacoin, mccardguy1

    Negative BST: NONE!

I wanted to make money in moderns! Seems everybody is from what I read here.

I still cannot believe ICG Proof 70 DCAM is priced at $38 and PCGS at $2600 or something.

Not even classics have a spread anywhere near that ratio between ICG and PCGS.

    Q >>

Most of the money that has been made on the moderns that has been talked about on these forums has NOT been in buying in the secondary market. The people buy it direct from the mint and then get a 70 on their gold eagle or whatever, which they IMMEDIATELY sell. If you notice, the secondary market value of those coins in general is dropping like a rock. It is the poor b#stards like yourself who BUY those things in the secondary market who take it in the shorts. Also, for all the anniversary gold and silver eagle lottery winners there are also probably a healthy percentage who sent in their coins and got pr68 or worse grades who are at a net loss position anyhow due to grading fees. Finally, with all the modern stuff the Mint does sell, it IN GENERAL, is very hard to figure out which coin(s) will appreciate over time (as opposed to ones like the anniversary issue stuff which looked pretty good from the get-go).

Trying to get rich quick in the rare coin market, unless you are willing to put in the time to learn about what you are buying, is a suckers game, the odds are stacked against you, and there will be PLENTY of people who will be only too happy to take your money.
