Is this Fake?

Don't know how to post a link. Saw this 1975 cello on ebay. Can't remember ever seeing a mid 70's cello without some type of labeling or markings. Is it fake?

Thanks.

    Link

I don't know anything about them but here is a link to it.
  • All of the Cello's I have seen from 75 usually have the writing on the front. Not to say that this could be legit, I am used to seeing them look like this

  • I agree with tennessee. Could be legit, but almost looks like it is shrink wrapped. Would need to see a scan of the back.

The seller's feedback scares me though...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

with the price it is likely to sell for on E-bay, Dont take a chance. It looks like it is going to sell close if not more than packs that are legit.
With the Stargell on front and Griffey on back that even makes me more suspcious. The Stargell doesnt look like it could pull more than an 8 if it were graded so if bought it wouldnt be worth busting in my opinion.

Bad feedback, weird looking cello. Any red flag, ANY AT ALL, on a vintage pack purchase should scare you away unless you are a fool with excess money.

    This has several.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • is that a gum stain on the Griffey back?

I believe all should have printing on wrapper...as all the other ones offerered right now on ebay do. And here is the back of one of those.

  • I would say the cello is a fake, I remember the 75 topps rack packs and the 75 cello packs/boxes the only reason I metion the rack packs is because in other years certain rack packs consisted of 3 Plain
cello wrapped packs or like the 82 or 83 donruss grocery racks where there were 3 wax packs wrapped in a rack, But i never remember any 1975 topps rack packs wrapped in cellos,or any 75 cellos without the Printing on the front and back. Just my opinion but I would steer clear of this pack.

  • On another note what year do you consider the cutoff for sending packs to psa 1977 or 1975 or 1987 ect ect ??, myself I could not see anyone submiting packs or boxes past 1980. I do have alot of unopened wax and some sealed cases but only a few of the boxes are before 1980, I orginally got on Ebay just to sell off all the unopened boxes that I have but after reading threads like this one it makes me cringe because I know I would not recieve a fair value due to the fact that everyone is gun shy on both sides of the table (with good reason) Bad dealers that open and reseal and collectors that open and reseal and then either try to resell to another collector or claim the dealer sold them a bad pack/box and get a refund. I know once in my store a boy and his father came in and bought misc packs like 5 packs of different years of football first pack they opened claimed it had been opened and resealed I just laughed and asked why? The boy said because he didn't get a Joe Montana RC , I pointed out that he had opened a 1982 topps FB pack and I would glady refund his money because he pulled one of the best centered LT rookies I had seen and needed it for another customer the 82 packs were 4.00 ea at the time and Taylor RC booked at 25.00,also pointed out the 12.00 packs of 1981 Topps but also pointed out the fact the odds where probally about 1 in 36 of pulling a Montana RC. They kept the cards and became great customers, I just wonder what would have happened if they didnot get a good card? Just rambling
remeber another real good customer it took him 81 packs to hit a 1987 donruss Mcquire RC he hit everything else and he watched me break the seal on the case the packs were 60 cents each 18 a box. sometimes luck of the draw sucks! Sorry to bend the ears!
  • I have seen 75 cellos like this before on ebay. Unsure if legit.

Maybe its from a rack pack ?? In 1989 for a short while Fleer wrapped each "stack" of cards in cello and then put it in the rack wrapper.

  • Guessing it is a fake. All cellos have the writing printed on them.

  • ok ok I know GAI's history but this one has no writing on front and back ??? Same for 1967,1968,1972 and some FB ones as well that I saw in completed auctions. If you want to know for sure go to ebay groups named Wax Packs ect. Nice knowledgable guys. Gotta join though. Its free.

Looks homemade to me. All 75 cellos had the 25C Topps label on the front. There were no such thing as "grocery" cellos in 1975. All 75 rack packs contained three sleeves of 14 cards each. Topps began using the logo and price on cellos in 1973 (though I recall seeing a 1972 "test" cello that Steve Hart confirmed as authentic a few years back). Cellos from 1970-1972 came in the blue cardboard box and contained between 27-33 cards. There have been a lot of fake "grocery" cellos from the 1970s popping up on ebay over the last year or two, some of which were actually mistakenly graded by GAI.

Edit: Authentic cellos from the 1960s had no lettering or logo on them.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
