Newbie has question

Hello all I am new to the boards and fairly new to collecting, but have been lurking for awhile..My question is I am sending some coins in to be graded and I wondered if you take them to a dealer (I don't know him) what guarantee do you have that the coin you give him is the coin that is sent in.I hate to sound like I am untrusting towards dealers but there are only 2 in my neck of the woods and I took some into one of the shops they were 4 down leaf wisconsin quarters and he told me they were worth a quarter and that there were bags and bags for sale at some Long Beach show this happened about a year ago so I asked him why people pay so much on ebay for them and he said he didn't know.He acted like I was bothering him and I was the only one in the store. So that leaves me one dealer left.Any suggestions or could you tell me the steps taken to send a coin in through a dealer and what to watch out for.
Thanks newbie

Hi stick!!
Welcome to the forum!!
I agree that you should join PCGS
and send them in yourself!!

Most dealers can be trusted this far but you never know. If in doubt then send them yourself.

I want to be insulted
I want my coins to be insulted
I want to feel stupid
I want to be pressured to buy his crap for retail and dump mine 20% below wholesale
When I feel the need for any of those things, I go to my local dealer!
Otherwise, I keep him out of it.
Perhaps you have better local dealers...
Boy, you should get quite a response on this thread. Perhaps you ought to send a copy of it to him.
I'm sure someone taught you in life that there are good people and then there are....the rest. It sounds to me as if this guy's a bad dude who picks off anyone any opportunity he gets. A smart dealer would recognize that he could cultivate a new revenue source that could last for years. It's great that you got a clear sense of his character early on, and it didn't even cost you anything!
There are some decent dealers around me, though I'll drive about 45 minutes to see one I have come to trust. But I'm really happy I joined PCGS--its worked out great. Between the free 8 grades and quarterly grading specials, I've been really pleased all around. Have there been some grades that are less than I expected, sure. On the other hand, I unexpectedly got a MS-70 on a gold Civil War commem earlier this year. Yes, I drink the cool-aid, but I am one happy camper overall. If you like coins in plastic tombs, I don't think you'd regret it.
Wishing you all the best--

The coins I will be sending in are 2-1oz plats looks like one has a ding on the thick bar on the crown the other looks really good.1 3coin ase set I opened it and all coins look great will send in rp also and 5 down leaf and 1 up leaf I put them at 62-64 on down leaf and 62 up leaf and have 1 graded 65 down leaf just a little of my collection remember I just started.
And yes I wish I would have told him to call whoever had them and I would buy them all he also told me to get a real error coin like a 3 legged buff. But that is why I am a little nervous about this. When that happened that was my first time in a coin shop so not so good.
Thanks again

<< <i>Collectors club is definately one way to go, but at the risk of sounding negative, myself, are you sure you should submit the coins? Getting into collecting and reading posts in this forum can be rather exciting. It may pay to learn more and earn a better eye before taking the plunge and submitting. Just a thought.
