Anyone else hoping their submission pops before New Years?

Hi-
I have a submission of 50 1971 topps coins entered on Nov. 15 that I'm hoping the grades will pop on Friday!! Anyone else waiting on a early to mid-November submission?

I turned in a 25 card 1948-1971 submission at the Nov. 17th Chicago show that I'm still waiting on. Mix of fleer, topps, 1971 OPC and one kellogg card. I'm guessing that PSA can't book fees as revenue until the cards are graded so hopefully they will be busting their behinds to get as many orders done as possible by Friday.

I would bet they book the fees the second they receive them. That is what irks me the most - they have my $$$ as of Nov. 16 and yet no grades still. I expect my sub to go the two or so months max.

  • I feel that PSA charging their fees to our credit cards when they receive the submission is ok. PSA has to make sure that they can collect their fess prior to performing their service for us. A lot can happen to a submitters financial situation between the times they receive the sub and when the cards actually get graded. I am referring to the specials of course. Any available credit on a credit card can disappear if someone has a rough go of it financially and is forced to max their card. Once the service is provided, there is no way to "return" that service to PSA if a charge fails to go through. The cards have been graded and encapsulated already. This is a much different situation than buying returnable goods. While most of us most likely will never face this, PSA must still protect itself against these situations.

  • I believe it is a violation of the terms of most credit card processing agreements to process a charge more than 30 days before the item/service will be delivered.

I did a quick check of their 10-K (you can access from this site) and cut and paste the revenue recognition policy. As you can see they have to grade and ship before they can recognize the revenue. They are a June 30th year end company so they have some internal push to get out what they can by 12/31 but I would suspect there is a bigger push at June 30th depending on how well the quarter/ year had been to date.

    From June 30 2006 10-K filing:
Revenue Recognition Policies. We generally record revenue at the time of shipment of the authenticated and graded collectible or diamond to the customer. Our authentication and grading customers generally prepay our authentication and grading fees when they submit their collectible items to us for authentication and grading. We record those prepayments as deferred revenue until their graded collectibles are shipped back to them. At that time, we record the revenues from the authentication and grading services we have performed for the customer and deduct this amount from deferred revenue. For certain dealers to whom we extend open account privileges, we record revenue at the time of shipment of the authenticated and graded collectible to the dealer.Text

    Nathan,

I don't agree. PSA can hold onto the graded cards until the payments were made good. 99% of the time the cards are worth more than their cost to grade ($1.50 per maybe?) and therefore there is more than ample collateral.

  • I've got a 30 card Tallboy submission mailed 10/31, logged for "further processing" as of 11/07. I sent a second Tallboy submission the same day that was fully logged in on 11/03, that popped grades just late last week. Not looking good for grades to show up today.
  • I hope mine pops AFTER the New Year. I have this theory and it may be totally wrong but I am going with it.

I figure the more experienced graders have seniority on the PSA grader vacation schedule. I definitely do not want my 139 card sub (The 50s/60s special) graded by a noob or inexperienced grader. I figure there's a lot of guys out on vacation this week. I have already experienced this unfortunately on my 10 card Collector's Club Special that popped this week. Very tough grades (thought there would be a couple of 9s)... got 7 8s and 3 7s.

So, I am really hoping NO email comes today from PSA.

I have to agree I got murdered on a modern sub with a ton of 9's from 85 topps. not even one ten? That is what happens when you only send in stars image
  • Maybe you shouldn't have been cheap when paying for insurance and your star cards might have come back as 10's! Then again maybe if you did a bit of examing of all the '85's you have you would have been able to send in cards that would have gotten 10's, whether they be stars or commons! So when will you sell your '85 Mcgwire PSA 9? It is a 9 right. I mean I hope otherwise the card will sell for what $9.99??

My grades popped on the 29th...I'm shocked. With that being said, it doesn't appear the cards were shipped out.
