Online poll..........Sell a '58 PSA 8 Aaron to buy a Ryan RC?

I have an opportunity to buy a sizzling PSA 8 1968 Nolan Ryan RC, but to finance the purchase I'll probably need to sell my '58 Hank Aaron (white letter) in PSA 8. I need the Ryan card as it will complete my set (I had a PSA 7 but didn't like it and sold it). I don't need to complete the set now, but it bugs me that I only need one card and the Ryan RC I've found now is a blazer. On the other side, I don't have many '58 Topps and probably won't do that set for a long time.

What to do?

    sell, focus

  • Dont sell.......here's why

Nrmt Ryans come around fairly often. Nrmt 58 Aarons, not so much. Aaron is 70 something years old. Sad but true, he will not live forever. When he dies, there will be a huge demand for his earlier cards with 58 being one of the most popular. As Bonds (the fraud) nears Aaron's mark, there will be a rise in quality vintage Aaron material. While completing your set is a worthy goal, the greater choice would be to keep Hank.

PS - can we see both cards?

  • Tough Call. The Ryan is a cornerstone to the 68 set and if I remember correctly, you posted a scan of the Aaron months ago and its a beauty!!

You could get your high end commons from the early 70's graded, sell those and keep the Aaron and buy the Ryan outright.

  • If you need to complete, then it's a non issue. On a 1-1 basis, you've got a older Home Run King up against a non-cy winner.

SMR on the '58 Aaron is $750, so it would only finance part of the cost of the Ryan.

  • Wow. That really is a tough call. Rookie cards are king in the hobby and tend to appreciate faster than the rest. On the other hand those 58 Topps cards in high grade are much harder to find than the 68's. I guess if I were in those shoes I'd sell and take the Nolan Ryan under the assumption the Aaron card could be obtained with patience at the right price later. I'd rather have my set completed and enjoy that feeling of accomplishment.

There is no doubt I would keep the Aaron. Much more difficult to find in high grade. There are lots more Ryan rookies to be graded. Those prices could even drop over time. Be patient! Find more miniscule things to sell to purchase that Ryan. It may be more work but no sellers remorse once that Aaron is gone.

Sell plasma or sperm to buy the Ryan and keep the Aaron.......
  • No brainer money saving tips that guys seem to have a hard time following, and that don't reduce any enjoyment.

    1. Don't go to the bar. Go to Sam's club, buy a couple of cases of beer instead. Save big$$. Do this for three months. Figure in one trip to the bar per week=$35, x 12 = 420. Minus $40 for three cases of light beer, and you save $380. I would spend the extra $5 per case and buy some good beer though.

    2. Don't go out to eat. Buy five pound bags of chicken breasts instead...when ready for a good meal, mariante two of them for you and your significant other(if you have kids throw in a box of Mac and Cheese), sautee them, add a side of mashed potatoes, and it tastes just as good. You will also feel much better knowing that you spent $2 on your family meal, where the exact same meal at Chili's would cost you over $30(two chicken breast meals, and two kids Mac -N- Cheese meals). Figure you would go out to eat twice every three weeks. Do this for three months, 8x$30 savings = $240

    3. What do you do for lunch at work? Most probably spend anywhere from$3-$5 dollars per lunch if they go out. If they go to Jimmy Jones of something, it is more. Figure $20 per week. Bring a sandwich, buy a large bag of chips and put some in a baggie each day. You will save at least $10 per week. Do this forever! Only go out once in a great while. Better yet, make an extra chicken breast at dinner, and a little more mashed, then you save more. Homemade dinner left overs are the biggest money savers...always make just enough for lunch the next day.

Those are three super easy money savers that don't take any enjoyment out of your lifestyle, but will give you some extra cash to keep some of the treasures you will cherish for a long time.

One more, don't go golfing this year! Go bike riding, shoot some hoops at the park, play touch football...there are lots of virtually free recreational activities. What does it cost for 18 holes now? $100? Save bigtime here!! I stopped playing golf five years ago, as the prices are ridiculous.

You can make small changes, and I don't want to call them sacrifices, because they are not. It is simply a better use of time and of your money being spent. These are just a few of the quick and easy ways to save. Try them out.

Would keep the Aaron - find another way to finance the Ryan. Would a nice but only PSA 7 one fit in your set? Or is this 8 "the one?" Still, I would choose to hang onto Mr. Aaron. image

    Do not sell Aaron.

Cut expenses, sell junk, and buy Ryan with the savings/proceeds.

Keep the Aaron. Wait for the Aaron prices to go up and Ryan to come down.
If it doesn't still keep the Aaron and wait for a nicely centered PSA 7 Ryan.
In the long run the Aaron will be more valuable and more saught after
than the Ryan. But, I'm not a Ryan fan anyways and never understood the clamor
for the card in the early '90's. Hank will always be the Homerun king as far as
I'm concerned. No juice involved. Joe

Only sell the Aaron if it is to meimage I have sold cards that I never thought I was going to sell and I only missed them for a short time. I would say if the card is a have to have card and you will feel better about getting it- then go for it. All cards can be bought again in time.

Sell the commons; keep the Aaron - but by all means buy the Ryan if it is that nice.

No doubt....wait off on the Ryan and save the Aaron.

Like others said, there are far fewer of the Aaron, it will appreciate more, and there will ALWAYS be plenty of Ryans available.

  • Keep the Aaron...but I don't think Ryan's coming down in price. His stats will never be approached in this age of 30 starts per year and he will become even more appreciated.
  • Keep the Hammerin Hank. You would regret selling it. You want the purchase of the Ryan to be a thrill, why combat that thrilling feeling with the tugs of seller's remorse?
