Zito to San Fran?

Interesting news. I didn't see this coming. I like him but 7 years and $126m seems steep!?

Not so much the money per year, but the length of contract. Big risk (probably mitigated for the team by insurance...) if he gets injured...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • What an absolutely ridiculous amount of money for a # 2-3 starter, he's a very good pitcher but certainly not one of the best. somebody will end up with a bargain if they sign Mulder and he can make it back from injury. he was a better pitcher in Oakland during their time there together. Phil
  • Zito will get shelled in San Fran.

He will be a .500 pitcher for a sub .500 team with a horrible runs scored vs. runs allowed ratio.

The visiting team's wind blown homers will make Zito wish that he played in a dome.

Maybe its a San Fran thing that all guys named Barry must go there to let their careers die.

Perhaps but in 6+ seasons with Oakland he never missed a start and spent zero days on the DL.

#2 or 3 starter? How do you figure? Oakland had one of the stronger rotations in baseball last year and Zito was the Ace.

All the talking heads seem to think that the reason is because Zito was too scared to go to NY and didn't want the added pressure. Zito is too layed back to be a number 1 starter in my opinion. His homeruns allowed and ERA have gone up each of the last three years. His 86 MPH cheese fastball makes this investment a poor choice. I think you can only spend that kind of jack on power pitchers.
