Information needed on 1973 topps baseball candy lids

Hi-
I have a set of 55 1973 topps candy lids of baseball players. I'm wondering how psa grades these? I see by the pop reports that most are graded psa 5... Are they 5's because of part of the lid missing? Also, how rare are these sets? The one I have is decently centered and the lids look to be in good shape.. Any information on how psa grades these or about the set in general would be greatly appreciated!

  • Paul: The reason that PSA usually gives out 5's on these cards is because the small flap is usually bent. Recently a Nolan Ryan PSA 6 was on Ebay. I don't know haw much it sold for, but I bet it was for a few dollars! There is a seller on Ebay that has a Steve Carlton PSA 5 listed at $99.99. As you might imagine, I really like this great oddball set. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with yours.

  • Paul,
To add to Goodsports comment the reason for the 5's also could be that the majority of the lids I have seen are off center. I would be interested in the Pete Rose if you want to break up the set. Thanks

The downgrading is because the bend at the tab (created when the lid was inserted into the candy tub) is considered a crease or wrinkle by PSA. Their tolerance for centering on this issue is pretty good, and they're willing to overlook edge issues that I wouldn't if I were a grader.

I thought for sure my Carew Lid would 7 or 8 and it came back a 6(the highest graded).
  • How much does this set book for?

Hi, I agree with these guys that it is an oddball set. I don't know if its a big money maker or not but if you enjoy this set, then go for it. I have a Nate Colbert psa 7,candy lid. Its 1 of 3 graded that high or better. Its part of the Nate colbert master set, which leads me to another idea. You might check and see what sets these are needed in, or could be added. Then possible contact the set owners and go from there. Good luck on your desision.Sonny (calaban7)

  • It is definitely an oddball set. I think this would do better broken up for player set collectors then complete. The pop report shows only 187 total graded out of 56 cards. Doesn't seem to be a hugely popular set. Also like I said before I don't see many of them on EBay. I might have a slightly jaded opinion though as I would like the Rose. Whatever you do I think they are pretty cool. I like the oddball issues.

I love this set, and have one of the registry sets of it. Except for certain hot players (e.g., Nolan Ryan), there hasn't been much competition when graded examples were put up - several of the ones I have I bought from the seller privately after they were unbid at $9.99 plus s/h (PSA 5 commons, each then highest grade known for that card).

Good luck if you do decide to grade and sell.

  • Stone, those proofs are awesome! If you don't mind me asking, did they come from the Topps Vault? Thanks for showing them.

Definitely this set would be most saleable (?) to player collectors. I bought a raw Yaz & had it graded, don't believe I've ever seen a graded one on ebay.
