"AT" Morgan that I still like, sort of

One of my earlier, stupid purchases from e-bay. Still, I have mixed emotions and kinda like it the way it looks, but was wondering if it can be cleaned without doing any damage to the coin. Under that toning is a nice piece of history. Any thoughts?

  • Are you 100% sure its AT? While the toning may look odd I have seen a few NT Morgans toned like it. I would leave the coin as is.
  • A friend of mine felt the same way you do, so I sent it in to NGC who declared it AT. I don't know enough about AT coins and accepted NGC's decision. However, I really like the coin under its unique toning and wished it wasn't AT. You know, that wishing upon a star crap doesn't work, because she's still toned today. imageimageimage

To get that off, the coin would then probably be designated cleaned rather than AT. You can try soaking in acetone for a few days and see what happens, that might not help but definitely won't harm the coin.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

  • Just because a TPG says one thing does not make it 100% fact. Just look at the grades on coins. Anyhow this coin does have the look of AT but thats not to say some people would still not like it. I say if you are unhappy with it sell it and buy another coin you like. Leave it as it sits.
  • Acetone eh...If it won't hurt the coin I believe I'll give it a go. Thanksimage

It looks very obviously chemically AT'd to me. No service should grade it, and I'm not sure if it can be dipped off. That said, even if it could, you might not like the result, as hairlines might become visible again...

  • Is it just me or dose the two in the date look kind of small?

  • So much to learn... I had better just leave her alone. Thanks Jeremy...I took the coin back out busco69 and it is the same size as the others. It does however look slightly smaller in the cap I submitted. Must be an optical illusion. Take care and thanks for your input guys.image

  • Agree with Jeremy....looks obviously AT....but if you didn't invest the farm in it and you like it.....I say leave it alone. Hopefully the surfaces are stable now and it won't turn black over the next few years. image
  • Do you remember the name of the seller? This coin looks familiar to me.
  • Flyfishguy,

Dug out the old receipt and his name is David Reinert and his email handle was/is joda364@pdt.net...Is he the guy you were thinking of?

  • I would not do anything to the coin, get it out once a month to remind yourself why you bought it and why you would not buy another like it....a learning tool that happens to be a pretty coin too....

that coin is 100% AT. You can tell because of the abrupt change from silvery-blue to that dark brick red (which doesn't occur naturally). If it was natural the change would be more smoothed out.
  • I found this one on eBay and thought they were twins....

  • Reminds me of some of the women I used to date when I was single, except my wife of course. Many of the pretty ones, cost me a lot of money in the long run. Watch out for the heavy makeup!image

I would not try to dip it. I would just enjoy it the way it is.

I think that coins sort of cool, but at the same time, kinda creepy.
  • I have decided to leave her as is. Got some good guidance in this post. I took it to work and a lady said, "Boy, that would look real nice as a necklace." I believe I'm going to take seemyauction's advise and let it be a lesson learned. Take care allimage

If you like it, you like it. There's nothing wrong with collecting coins that would be returned in bodybags by a top TPG. Just know what you are getting and don't pay "original/problem-free" prices for it.
