Why do people bid on cards they already own to stop you from getting them?

Honestly now, why does people bid on cards they already own ?? I have 2 people who try bidding my cards i need up just because they are afraid of me beating them for the # 1 spot on the PSA board. Honestly who cares what place you are in !!
I constantly try to work out deals for my extra cards i have in high grade with about a 50/50 shot of working out a deal. I always seem to give more then i am getting.
theseive who has the #1 spot for the 1970 Topps hockey always bids on cards he already has. Yes i think you are a## for doing this.
I hope you do read this (theseive) and explain yourself. The other person i will not name because it happens less frequently.

Who else has somebody feared for there life that they are going to be knocked out of the #1 spot so they keep buying what the other person needs or makes you pay through the nose ??

  • Tough call on this one.

I've got a Jack Dempsey Master set that I'm pretty competitive about (despite the fact that I'm WAY out from 1st) but the bottom line is that I collect Dempsey cards first and participate in the registry second. I would eagerly bid and hopefully win on many Dempsey cards even if I already own them. Not to keep others from obtaining them but just because I'm always looking for an upgrade or duplicates for my personal collection, especially if the price is right. While there may be two cards both residing in a PSA 6 holder I can almost guarantee you that there would be one I'd rather have than the other, the whole "buy the card, not the holder" thing.

Remember, if they put in a higher bid than you they still gotta pony up the dough and buy it.

that is the number reason to keep your registry private. some years i have to do this and in others i don't, but i am not afraid to shut it down if i am getting played for more money. information is key. this happened to me and my nemesis got hung with a bunch of cards because he no longer knew what i needed. after that he backed off quite a bit.

I agree with what Arthur said.

I have bid on cards that I already have hoping to get a more centered or just better looking card in the same grade.

If they are doing it just to drive the price up or trying to keep others from getting it, thats kinda crappy.

Matt, that exactly mentality keep prices of 1/4 and 1/10 pops very strong. I sopmetimes do it to protect an investment, but I usually dont end up winning the card. If I bought a PSA 8 common for 125$ and I see the same one for 50 bucks, well hell yeah I will throw a bid in. Those cards usually end up selling for more in the future, but for some reason it didnt attract a lot of bids that night.

They do it so the card goes for what they figure is far market value for the card they own.

  • Shooter, do you have a sniping service? Not sure if it would solve your problem but it might help.

Another thing to consider is to allow a few of the cards you need to slip by without placing a bid. After the others find themselves spending money on cards they already have they may decide that approach isn't a very efficient use of their time and resources. Who knows? It is ebay and everything pops up sooner or later if you don't mind waiting.

    Good luck

I think it's a modern manifestation of human nature... when we are in the presence of each other, we tend to be shy, cautious, respectful, even kind... but when we are behind our keyboards, our inner mean-spiritedness lets loose... maybe it's because there are no consequences for bad behavior in a virtual world, or maybe because we are cowardly when face-to-face, but our bravado kicks in when it can hide behind the anonymity of the internet... it kind of reminds me of road rage... too many drivers are mean to each other on the roads, yet if we encountered these same mean drivers face-to-face, many would actually be personable.

I swear, I think some psychologist will publish a book on internet personalities in the next 2 years (and there'll bne a big chapter on the phenomenon of internet predators).

I've been working on a few sets and haven't started another one because of there. There is one whack job out there who bids up every decent card in these particular sets to over market prices then relists them for even higher prices. I find it very irritating myself and can't wait to be done with the sets this dude is involved in. If I see his name as the seller I refuse to bid.

If it begins to be a big problem, just delete the set from the registry and wait until you have completed it to post it back up. Keep under the radar a bit.

Many times when you register a set that has heavy competition, your competitor will print out your list and keep it for their records. When you decide to hide your set because you feel that you are getting played it is too late. That is the reason why many choose to hide their sets until they complete it.

True, probably a better startegy for the new set than the existing one.

    Get a new ebay ID?

Then there are simply those guys like I'm dealing with that are obsessed with certain sets and bid aggressively on any and all cards in them regardless if someone else needs it for a set today. Someone will tomorrow and they get listed with very high prices.
