Question on ASE 20th anniv sets -- two orders rec'd

The two 20th anniversary ASE sets arrived today. As I tilted both boxes, I could hear clunking noises inside. One of them had one clunk sound, and the other had multiple clunk sounds. I decided to open the multiple clunks box as I was certain it had more than one loose capsule in it. All three capsules were loose. The uncirculated W mint has a crack in the side of the capsule. All three coins look great however. The date on the invoice is Dec 15.

The other box with the single rattle in it I figure has 1 loose capsule. My plan was to open one box and keep the other box sealed and perhaps sell the sealed box at a later date.

My question is: 99% sure there is a loose capsule in that sealed box, would you:

1. Sell it sealed years from now, with capsule rattling around in there.
2. Open it and re-seat the capsule, and then either sell it raw years from now or get them graded.
3. Send it for grading as is, sealed -- rattle and all.

Thanks in advance for your input and opinions.

Why would you sell them all right now. they are going to be worth a mint in later years! You keep them sealed and you will be very happy in years to come. My 2 cents worth
    Transactions..
wondercoin, duffman,PiecesOfMe, Smittys, LogPotato, Bumanchu, Tydye, segoja, Harry779, FullCameo, Twosidestoeverycoin, jmdm1194, rkfish, drewsef, Chrischampeo, Kaelasdad, Ahrensdad, Dabigkahuna, Barbwire, sebrown, mkman123, Gerard
  • Not going to sell them now. Am keeping one for myself and will sell the other years down the road. I am wondering about the sealed box with the loose capsule in it. Are you going to keep your loose ones as is?
  • I'm going to pack the 2 boxes inside another really wrapped well and send in for grading.
Whatever happens they ARE not going back to mint. No Way No How.....
Will take my chances they make good grades.

I understand that the receiving and opening of packages at PCGS is videotaped so anyone using any of the info would be caught in no time. Other than your address which is already on the outside of the box as well as being on your submission form there is no CC info of any kind on the inside paperwork supplied by the Mint. Much ado about nothing IMO.

The packing list inside the box has the name and address of the buyer, the amount paid, the tracking number, and the order number. If you sell anything on ebay the buyer can get your name and address and I don't think the tracking or order number is important so what am I missing?

I suppose if you have a mole working for the mint with access to the right info you could probably get smoe credit card number from the customer number. There is NO CC info on the Mint packing list inside the box.

That's correct. Not only is there no CC info on the packing list there is no indication that a CC was used. One could have paid by money order or personal check(I think). Anyway my advice to pontiacinf is don't drink and post. You'll feel bad about it in the morning if you do.

  • So the consensus is to leave the box sealed with the capsule rattling around in there. I picked the worst sounding of the 2 boxes and opened it as my keeper set. They are drop-dead gorgeous.

This leads me to a second question -- when it comes time to sell it years from now, how is a potential buyer going to feel about purchasing a sealed box with the capsule rattling around in there?

As long as the capsule doesn't pop open from extra transit shaking, it shouldn't matter. After all you didn't seal the carton so you are not responsible. I guess you could always fill the box with that expandable foam.

I got 2 today as well with ALL 3 CAPSULES IN EACH BOX RATTLING AROUND! I opened the box, and put the capsules back in. Once out of the capsules, its a lot easier for the coins to pop out!

So heck with it, i opened them!
