Concealed cash

I have received it usually in a security envelope. Yesterday I got cash wrapped in Kleenex in a regular envelope. Does this work to block the screening or whatever is used to swipe cash?

Either way, I would never suggest sending cash in the mail. Any unscrupulous seller could simply claim it never arrived.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Over the years, I've frequently rec'd and sent small sums of cash when dealing with Canadians. It's easier for both parties. Cash was just wrapped in paper. Never had a problem, but I consider that blind luck.
  • I have had the same experience with small sums of cash and have done it myself once or twice. I won't do it anymore as mikeschmidt says. There is always the chance someone could claim it wasn't received.

I just sent 2.75 to someone in cash instead of writing the check. He got it just fine.

I have never had a problem periodically sending cash either although I am always a little hesitant to do it.

I once received 5 One Hundred Dollar bills in an overnight envelope from France. I could have easily claimed the envelope was empty but if coarse did not. I shipped the package after I made sure the bank accepted the bills as real and not counterfeit.

By the way, that was for a pack of Coca-Cola playing cards from 1943 that I paid $5.00 for at a garage sale!

  • When a seller does not accept paypal or checks then I will send cash if less than $10. Only had one seller in 10 years steal a whopping $3 from me. I've saved well over a $100 in money order fees going this route. I don't know why sellers don't take other forms of payment as I tend to skip the item or bid less when my options are limited. I've always just stuck the cash inside the printed invoice. If my total is something like $2.85 I'll just throw in three $1 bills and consider the extra 15 cents a tip. Getting a MO at Walmart runs something like 45 cents and a postal MO is closer to a buck so I still save. If my total is $2.25 then I'll stick two $1 bills and a quarter in a sealed toploader and send away. With the advent of Paypal I rarely get much cash in the mail anymore. I always found it to be a nice little treat in the past when I needed a few bucks in the wallet.

  • Yeah I dont say I accept cash nor do I send it but if received I accept it. I was wondering why the Kleenex? Does it have any "special" powers?

Only if it is one of those germ killing Kleenex's. I kills the germs, making the money kleener, therefore it launders the cash.

All kidding aside, it just blocks the post man from feeling what is inside. Cash, when it is more than 1 or 2 bills, feels very distinct. The only one you really have to worry about is YOUR postman, he is the only one who handles the envelope individually, outside of a mail facility with no supervision or cameras. Most are 100+% honest, but there are always a few bad apples in a bunch. That being said, I receive cash at least once a month and I haven't had a problem yet. The people I get it from usually wrap it in a couple sheets of paper or a top loader as mentioned above.
  • I send cash regularly, both because I can't get to the PO in time (I just sent some now, for instance, because I am on vacation and bringing stamped envelopes and finding a drop off box is easier than looking all over for a PO), and because it saves money order fees. I've probably had ~$50 lost over the past year, but I've saved much more than that by not paying the 90 cents for 100s of transactions.

I may be paranoid, but I thought a couple days ago that it may be safer to fold the paper around the cash so that it is about 3-4 inches wide instead of the width of the cash, as it may be less obvious when holding it up to the light.

Of course, it's riskier than sending a check or MO, but if you trust the seller, I don't see anything wrong with it as long as it's a nominal amount, say $25 or less. I receive cash all the time from Canadian buyers with no problems.
