Mishandled Proof Morgan?

I bought some silver dollars that were rattling around loose in a box today. Ordinarily, the coins are all common dates and often have problems. This batch was a little different in that there were three seated dollars, a CC and a 1921 Peace dollar in the bunch.

The coin pictured below usually would not have caught my attention, but since it came in a better lot, I thought I would post some pics. The coin seems to be really well struck, is definitely prooflike, and the denticles on the reverse are real sharp.

The coin is not likely a proof, and if it isn't, I'd like to know why.

Anyone?

From that pic it's a tough call. Some of the lettering and parts of the rims looks bold and squared off and a noticable lack of marks, but many business strikes also came with bold strikes and PL surfaces. Even in that state, does the coin present an overall proof finish and appearance?

Besides the obvious things like the rim, it is a B1 reverse and all the B reverse proofs were B2, VAM-131.

    The coin has prooflike fields.

    Thanks for the comments guys!

I'm sure it has lots of the other kind of moments, but things like that (three seated dollars rattling around in a box) make it sound like a fun job.

Usually when coins come in like this, they are circulated Ikes, Kennedys and foreign coins that relatives brought home from WWII. I am always pleased when there are surprises in the batch.

  • not struck sharp enough. A proof will have full hair around the ear

    It can't be a Proof 'cause it's a VAM 80. image

If I had that one, I would be tempted to give it a quick little bath, and see what kind of mirrors it has under the splotchy toning.... image

    Maybe ...

I did just that for the first time ever yesterday, rescuing a very ugly duckling in the process. It is a lovely fully p/l thing, now crisp and mostly white. I think it improved it. It is the only coin of any consequence that I have ever owned and simply *known* I would be helping matters by doing that. As for that 78, I'd think it over awfully close.

I wouldn't dip it. Keep it original. Cleaned up it will just be another average B1 reverse. It might bring out the PL fields better, but also reveal marks (and possible cleaning) hidden in the toning.

I don't think I am going to dip it. I prefer the original look to the coin (though it is a bit prooflike).
