My Favorite Card Shop Owner

I just want to talk about how cool this guy is. His name is Rick, otherwise known as Doctor Wax Battle. He owns the Backstop in Toms River, NJ.(His website is: www.thebackstop.net in case anyone wants to check him out). I visited his store and I told him that I like to do flea markets in that area and if he had anything relatively cheap that I could sell. He gave me boxes and boxes of old stuff and common rookie cards and a few oddball things for very cheap prices. He really hooked me up. If anyone else has a favorite card shop guy, speak up.

Yeah, I bought an overgraded lot of 3200 1976 baseball cards from him. Stay away from him. He would not accept returns. He did knock off $35. image

The website makes a big deal about buying that stupid shirt made up of game used shirt swatches. Doesn't sound like the kind of seller I'm looking for.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

At first I thought SPAM, but after watching the videos it is clear that this guy has no interest in self promotion......
  • Yes I did and I'm very sorry I didn't give you your props sooner. Thank you so much Dave.
  • Believe me I'm not spamming, I'm just thanking a card shop owner for giving me my money's worth and for his giving me advice on getting started as a collector/seller.

  • The backstop as a store is pretty good... I have bought and sold with him a few times over the years...

  • Funny thing is, i've been to his store at least a dozen times over the years and i have never seen him wear that silly wig or even act remotely close to what you see in those videos.

He always seemed like a quiet kind of guy

There is a shop in the Bensalem Plaza in Bensalem PA whose store I recommend. The owners name is Alan Faden. Yes, Alan can be a little bit of a weasel at times like almost all card shop owners are, but he is an "honest weasel" (if that makes any sense - LOL) and I've never known him to cheat anybody, especially kids who are vulnerable. He has an excellent reputation.

He is mainly a coin guy but has a decent selection of cards as well. I have bought many supplies from him and he always gave me a good deal. He is an interesting guy to talk to and is never too busy to have an interesting conversation about cards, coins, or other collectables, and when I ask he always updates me on some of the latest events in the hobby.

Interesting ..... I am in Toms River ALL THE TIME and have never heard of this cat. I would like to think that if it was worth the stop I would have caught wind of it at some point.

    Dan,

It's on rt 37 heading towards Seaside. It's down ways a bit on 37, not too far from the bridge

It's on the opposite side of the road though if your heading towards Seaside
