Post your best steal or deal for the year

Did you buy something you have always wanted, or did you buy something at a steal of a price.
Lets see it , and tell us about it.

This medal was struck to mark the Royal Agricultural Society Exhibition at Windsor in 1889. The show was held in Windsor Great Park from the 24th to 29th of June 1889. The Prince of Wales acted on behalf of Queen Victoria who was President of the Society for that year. The Queen attended on the 27th and 28th and also knighted the Director of the Show on the 30th. The medal is hollow and was made in two halves, making this an unusual British medal for that period. It was designed and executed by Countess F. Gleichen. The reference for the medal is BHM#3379 and is shown only as being struck in bronze. It is also designated as very rare. 77mm dia and it weighs 114.3grams. It has a NAVY blue leather medal case... on the top it has a gilt CROWN. I paid $230

After I got this, I checked it with my electronic Gold tester and it indicated 22kt solid GOLD. It was most likely presented to the Director when he was Knighted by the Queen making this unique or at a minimum undocumented and 4 ounces of Gold.

  • It's not a steal nor a deal, but I did not think early on that I would add this piece to my Great Britain type set, these don't come cheap ($1,000.00+).
As my collecting time has progressed, I've only been able to add a hand full of coins each year, but I still enjoy working this set, and hate to think what
I have spent on it image

I beleive this is the most expensive coin I have purchased, I go it this past September.

I won a very nice Polish 5 groszy dated 1930 from Jeff Zarit on Ebay for under $400. This essentially helped complete my set of Polish "minors" from this period. While this 5 groszy has a relatively high mintage, it is virtually impossible to find in uncirculated condition. Unfortunately, this particular coin came with some small verdigris spots, which became the subject of a thread last spring.
I sent the coin in to NCS and it ended up in an NGC holder graded MS 64 image The value of the coin is probably close to $1,000.

1884 Canada cent, obverse portrait #1, ICCS MS-62 brown. ICCS has graded only two of these in mint state, both at MS-62. I estimate that only about one out every thirty or forty 1884 cents was minted with an obverse #1 die. A condition rare coin and a scarce coin in any condition. It took me about two years to track one of the two mint state examples down.

This is how I felt when it arrived as I'd had a few false alarms trying to find one.
