Scanning cards with black background

Help! I just got a brand new scanner. My old scanner was 6 years old. It was doing fine, but I just wanted better quality. Anyway, when I scan a card for Ebay, I always left the lid up so that it would show a black background for better contrast in order to see the corners and edges better. It even looks better on a black bordered card.

Anyway, I just got a Canon CanoScan LIDE 70. It scans great. The only problem is that I can't get a black background without putting a piece of black construction paper in the background. The background shows up as white. I have played with it for an hour and can't figure it out. Any ideas?

Scan with the lid up and the lights off.

Lights off! Worked like a charm. Thanks. I had the lid up, but the lights were on.
