Questions for the Platinum buyers...

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,394 ✭✭✭✭✭
These questions are ONLY for the people that bought the 2006 W Plats...

Before this offering, were you collecting any platinum eagles or fractionals? If so, which series?

If this was your first platinum purchase, will you now attempt to build up your collection of platinum eagles? If so, which series.

And finally, how long do you plan to keep what you bought?

I'll start. I never bought platinum eagles before and I plan on dumping them all whenever I'm offered a big fat profit.

I am not a platinum collector. I jump in because of the low mintage. Will keep only one of of each. will sell the other sets.

I collect the 1/2 ounce proofs. I am trying to keep my 2006 W's long term. All will be sent to PCGS for FS. Selling my other coins mostly duplicates and others that I don't mind parting with. 12 month interest free loan to buy my plats W's so other than paying the balances I am in no hurry in selling my coins. I could sell just one 3-coin gold set but can't part with it and be able to pay off the balance immediately. In my opinion, try to hold on to these long term if you can, you will get more for them in a year or two. This of course all depends on the final mintages. With 8 one ouncers hopefully they will increase in value. For those don't have that option of keeping longterm than sell immediately and take what you can get.

  • I collected all the plat eagles for awhile and then it just got to rich for me. I have stayed with both the proof and the uncirculated $10's though.

I picked up a few of the $10 06-W uncirculated plats for my set in hopes to get a 70.

The one oz. plats a were just a shot.

I've collected the Plat Proof set from the get-go. Buy 2 sets each year. Almost took a pass on the UNC sets this year but ended up with 7 thanks to the forum.
  • I started collecting plats early 2005 when I learned platinum is 100 times rarer than gold. Just missed out on the proof 2004's.

I plan to collect the entire set of $50 proof and W-Unc eagles. I really like having the different reverses for each year.

I have been a plat. collector for a quite a while, and over recent years I have posted many times to these boards discussing the opportunities to enjoy the low mintages, beauty, and general collectibility of these coins. I am happy to see that some have recently decided to give some attention to the plats., whether their purposes are to collect, flip, admire, or simply discuss these issues. Here is a link to my all-time #1 set: top of the list
FYI: If you go to my plat. reg. set, I believe there is a link on that page to my other collections. The complete plat. proof set is one coin short of 100% 70DC. (I trust you can navigate the V2 - I haven't quite figured it all out yet)

*****Here is an interesting forum discussion of plats. from 4/04*****

.......ps. Some of the old links don't work anymore.
  • I have bought the 1/4 proof platinum the last 2 years 2005,2006
  • In July, I bought a 1/2 oz. Platinum Proof because it appeared that this would be the lowest mintage (to me). I did not know that the W-Unc series was coming out, nor did I care. I thought I would just start picking up one per year. What intrigued me was the apparent low mintage of the Proofs of about 3K+ 10K for the sets as a stated top Mintage range. After it arrived, I was stunned at the beauty it had! I began thinking and hankering for a 1 .oz Proof because it was a 'man's coin', and I started to fantasize about just buying up the rest the individuals for a 'full-boat', despite the added price over a set, with owing the 1/2'er and...I well, because I just felt...well.... fractional.

Then, I started looking around for a Coin Forum to get additional Platinum information + I wanted to see about the wisdom of buying a 2006 US Silver Proof Set for my son. When I stumbled here in the middle of the W-Unc threads, I decided to lurk. After ericj96's evangelistic pursuit of the evidence for a low mintage of the W-Unc's, I bought 6 sets (1-backordered stating shipment on 12/27/2006) + (10) 1 oz. Plats. I immediately put two sets up for sale on EBay, then promptly withdrew one set, raised the price of the other and let it expire. It was a half-hearted attempt, because it was just getting mentally tough to sell them. I had the funds, so I just yanked them down.....

    I figured that:

1.) I own a nice number of these ultra-low mintage coins as a result of a Perfect Storm of variables that came together at the right time and at place, so I did not hesitate to move on them.

2.) I now own part of history in that something like this hasn't happened in about 100 years.

3.) That if I held them all for 20 years, barring no other ultra-low run from the Mint, I should do very, very well on the $32K, I spent.

4.) So, for now I decided not to sell any and to keep them all, send them all out to grading at PCGS and go from there.

I read a nice blurb over at Blanchard this morning: 'Platinum is 15 times more scarce than gold. It is extremely expensive to produce. All the platinum ever mined would fit in a cube less than 25' x 25' x 25' feet on each side. It is one of the most essential industrial commodities in the world. Because of its remarkable properties, industry is constantly finding new uses for it. In addition to robust demand from the automobile industry, platinum is also indispensable in the production of jewelry, fertilizers, fiber-optic cable, anti-cancer drugs, pacemakers, eyeglasses, gasoline, and more. '

So unless civilization stops, on just the melt, I should be covered.

Yes, I plan on starting to build a registry just in Platinum.

As I've posted elsewhere, I took a break from coin collecting from about 99 to 06. Now that I'm back in it I've picked up all the mint bullion issues. I'm not sure when I'll be slowly building a set. I much prefer PT to gold for the reason stated above. --Jerry

I've been buying Platinum Proof 4-coin sets since 1999. Been buying Platinum BU's since 2003, but only the 1 oz size. I was thinking these W-BU's were going to be a large mintage issue but it sure turned out differently didn't it?

Does anyone know a good Coin Doctor? I'd like to get some pretty monster rainbow toning applied to a few of my 1 oz coins, that way they might sell to the Morgan lovers out there a little easier.

and I 'm in no hurry to part with my coins. I buy em cause I likes um. Just jokerin about toning up a couple.

  • this is the first time but also the beginning. already bought some previous years at apmex and ebay.
  • I've been collecting proof platinum from the beginning. Never considered the unc's until the low mintage of these caught my eye.
I bought 3 sets which will all be sent in for grading. I will keep at least one set for historic reasons and hope to recoup that cost by selling the other two. Time is no big deal and I will watch the trend to see when selling makes sense. I also stocked up on the gold unc W's in case they turn out to be a winner. I don't really see a losing proposition on any of these.

No, not my first platinum purchase.
    No, I wasn't and don't collect platinum.
Not long, I have already sold my 4 coin set & currently have 2 1 ouncers on eBay.
  • I plan on keeping most of my platinum.
I have sold already my Buffalo gold to APMEX to help pay for it. I am also going to sell all my 2001 Buffalo silver (10), my 2002 Platinum Proof Set, and my silver Eagles 1986 to 2006 to help fund my platinum. I also am going to sell my last set of Silver Proof Set 1999 to 2006. I can't seen to sell my 20th Anniversary Gold sets or my 20th Anniversary Silver sets.
  • Larry,

Could you please consider removing the FTP link ftp://www.members.aol.com/rhd13/boom from your posts?

Every single time I access a conversation that has this ftp link, my FTP client activates and fills my entire screen and attempts to download a file from your AOL member site. I have to wait for the FTP client to load, cancel out, and then wait for it to unload.. I've lost track as to the number of times this has happened, but it's really getting on my nerves.

Right now that link is just sitting behind a red "X" anyway, which means the original picture isn't there anymore, but the link is still there.

No (I owned one or two platinums needed for types sets only.)
No, I don't intend to collect them.
I will hold them 1-10 years depending on what the price does.

  • No i never purchase Platinum coins before the W platinum I purchased this year. I intend to buy anything that looks to stay under 10,000 coins. any time the mintage goes above 10,000, i think I will be able to purchase on the after market cheaper. That is providing Platinum does not go crazy in the future. image
  • I've been coolecting the 1/4 oz proofs all along and have a complete collection of those. I wasn't planning on getting the uncircs but the low mintage will allow me to fund my other passion which is pre-civil war gold.
Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.
  • I collect have collected the $10 proofs for about 2 years now and have a complete set. I have only just started on the $25 proofs.
I always put a low ball bid in for any uncirculated plats I see on teletrade. Once in a blue moon I get lucky and snag one for close to melt. I put my order in for the 2006 w plats as soons as the mint listed them and quite frankly I am miffed that they recieved so much attention image
as a collector I would like plats to remain under the radar until I complete the $25 set. Now I will have to be even more patient in my bidding until the speculators go away again.
