The amazing, astonishing 1966 Special Mint Set

Remember the old OF crew, and how they were regarded as being something less than stellar? Well, they're all at another forum now, and on Christmas Eve they centered their attention on this 1966 Special Mint Set up for sale on eBay, the proceeds of which are going to the Make A Wish Foundation. A furious and sometimes hilarious bidding war broke out, and--well, here's the end of the story.
Merry Christmas, kids

They also have their eyes on a 1976 Bicentennial Proof Set that ends in a couple of days, put up by the same seller--me. It's a long story how and why I put these modest dudes up for auction to begin with, but suffice to say, it's been a good thing.
One thing's for sure: No way anybody at this form could gather people together, combine resources, and outdo that forum. This isn't that sort of community. Don't get me wrong--it's a nice place. But it doesn't quite have that sort of benevolence in it.

Like I say, I'm assessing the body at large. No doubt there are many fine individual people; I know many. I'm referring to the community as a benevolent entity. It doesn't have the spirit, the wherwithal, to do something like they just did.

That's a very good point, Smitty. On that forum, there were a couple of "syndicates" formed whereby people pooled their very meager resources. Hundreds of dollars were raised in addition to this single auction win by that angel in disguise, ClarkofKent.

You are sadly mistaken, there have been numerous charitable fundraisers and donation drives here. It's nice that you have a forum where you can hang out with the cool people though. Perhaps you should head back on over there and leave us alone to ponder our miserable existence in peace.

Since Jeremy's not around to do this, concerning his annual auctions:

Here is a summary of the past 5 auctions:

    Auction 1: $1700
    Auction 2: $3000
    Auction 3: $5400
    Auction 4: $7225
    Auction 5: $4000

    5-Auction Total: $21,325--let's make a 6-auction total of over $25,000!

    nope, no benevolence here......

  • I guess that says it all. A $300 donation by a satin caped clarkofkent, trumps a $21,000 donation by an upcoming YN. No wonder the OF is OT.

Merry Christmas to you, too, Blinded. Hope the sleigh tips over at your house later this morning...
No, there's only this charity for a silly Proof Set. The idea was foment a little competitiveness, and to get the juices flowing I took what I thought would be construed as a tongue-in-cheek poke at this forum vs. the other. Instead, I seem to have sprayed the air with chit mist. I apologize again, and formally suspend the challenge to respond to the fine work performed by the Open Forum Refuge site.

You know, Clark did a great thing. You come after me here and in a PM, which I responded politely to. And, I've apologized.
Your answer to that is to continue stirring the pot, trivializing Clark's kindness and holding him up to ridicule.
All I can say is, the $300 Clark donated is $300 more than you'll put up for that Proof Set, you grumpy old fart.image

What you people fail to miss is that the OF was a large producer of most of those goods and funds that went to Jeremy's auction.

He does an amazing job. But the reason he posted the info on the other forum as well is becuase he knows where most of his bids and goods come from. Also, he gets so much money becuase he recieves qulaity donations. No one..and I mean NO ONE has ever bid crazy amounts of money for crappy coins in his auctions.

Ya'll are all so worried about shunning a group of people that you fail to see any gesture of good.

You all amaze me. So childish...it seems like sometimes only the YN's have any class anymore...

well, for a benevolent bunch, they sure have some axes to grind(individually and collectively) and seem to be distracted and unable to "forgive and forget" the transgressions of the past with regards to the PCGS forums. i find it ridiculous that some of that "benevolent" bunch who were troubled when they were here are such upstanding guys over there or at Sleepy Hollow. i always remember that Leopards can indeed change their spots, but it takes time, so let's give the other new saviors a bit more than a couple months to prove their stamina. my guess is that in the course of due time most will resemble their old selves(many already do to a certain extent) and the unrest that many so easily criticize here will grow anew in those sights as the Leopards shed their overcoats!!!

oh yeah, to get a good dose of individual benevolence and also some heartwarming forum benevolence, stay tuned for the Airplanenut auction. or has your AGENDA caused you to conveniently overlook stuff like that??

enough with the BS already, i for one say that if this place is so bad to you, pack your bags and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. take my word for it, we really, really would enjoy your participation, but i doubt we'll miss you very much..........................that goes from me to all the bozos who just have to continue ragging, and ragging, and ragging , and ragging. get over yourself already, you aren't that important.

have a Merry Christmas!!! try to remember what's important in your life, who's in control and why you're not. please, enjoy this short life and the things it gives you. i guarantee you, we'll each be gone before we know it and forgotten to all but a few shortly afterwards.

I think there have been several examples of "outdoing" this. But that's not the correct way to judge the spirit of the giving, anyway.

Mr. Eureka, ClarkofKent was not buying the mint set per se; it was merely a prop to have people donate to the Make A Wish Foundation. It was discussed at length over the course of several days.
That's the hallmark of the OF crew: They realize they are getting nothing for something, and play along in a fun, zany way. Other donations were PayPalled to me to the tune of an additional $300+, making that mint set worth more than $600. It's very hard to grasp someone deliberately overpaying by 20 X the value of a coin, but that's what they did. And the concept is extraordinarily difficult to bring over and expect people to grasp.
My daughter had a malignant brain tumor a few years back, and we're extremely lucky she's still here--along many physical and mental deficits from that ordeal. At the time the Make A Wish Foundation granted us her wish to go to to Disney World, and I've always wanted to repay them in some way. The folks there really answered the call--many of them, with much chiding, gauntlet throwing, daring etc. along the way. It was good fun, and I carried that spirit over here without realizing who I was talking to. I can't apologize enough, I guess.

to anyone who hasn't felt the generosity of this forum and it's members, i hope it reaches you someday soon. the gifts i've receieved without asking would spin your head and i can't imagine that those who've been so charitable confine themselves to doing it just for me. more than likely they are generous souls who choose to do so anonymously every day of their lives.
