WARNING- CALIFORNIA MAN PASSING BOGUS CASHIERS CHECKS...PLEASE READ!

Fellow Coin/ Currency Dealers,

I’m posting this thread to inform you of a person in California who is passing bogus cashiers checks. He is using several personal names as well as business/company names with various addresses. From what I have been able to gather, he sent out his first round of bogus cashiers checks with orders to coin AND currency dealers on or about September 11, 2006, which were received during and after the September Long Beach Coin Expo. I have been compiling information since September regarding this matter, and have been informed that he has recently sent out another round of bogus cashiers checks. He has “hit” a number of reputable dealers all over the United States.

I am certain that there are other victims of which I am not aware, and this is one of the purposes of this email: I want to warn dealers and make them aware of this problem, as well as try to identify other victims.

After tireless efforts with local and California Law Enforce Departments, I have located a detective in California, Joe Pena, who has agreed to tackle this case. We have made a lot of progress towards the capture of this criminal, but before Detective Pena can forward the case to the District Attorney he asked me to help locate as many victims as I could to help make the case stronger and ensure that charges will be pressed.

If you personally received an order or know of someone who did from any of the following names or address listed below, please contact me immediately. I will not reveal your name to anyone except the detective in charge who is working on this case. The perpetrators may be using additional false contact information other than those listed below, and that information would be helpful as well. Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation, and please forward this to other dealers on your contact list.

Cashier checks drawn on J.P Morgan—Chase as well as First Bank of XXXXX have been used in this scam, as well as the following aliases:

Marcus Smith (Mail box drop-off place)

Sunset Pointe Coin
3763 E. Colorado Blvd #102
Pasadena, CA 91107

Marcus Smith (Mail box drop-off place)

Lawson, Colbert & Associates 9852 West Katella Ave, Suite #115
Anaheim, CA 92804

James Gilmore

Gilmore, Ellis & Assoc.
8306 Wilshire Blvd.. Suite 671
Beverly Hills, CA 90211

There may be more false contact information other than these listed, and that information would me appreciated as well.

Thank you in advance for your help and cooperation and I ask you to forward this to other dealers on your contact list.

It might be worth while to note, if you have been victim, save any and all paperwork obtained from said party. Even in you realized something was wrong and did not send your coins.

    Great job Queen,
    Ray

Absolutely save any paper work (the letter that accompanied the cashiers check).

I also wanted to add that i need you to contact me if you received one of these bogus cashiers checks at all, whether or not you sent the coin doesn't matter.

Laura...perhaps this information should be posted on the CCE and have several of the larger numismatic organizations (ICTA, ANA, PNG, SPMC) notified so they can pass on this information to their members. Passing out flyers at the upcoming FUN Convention with this information would probably be greatly beneficial as well.
