Football stadiums

I was looking at the that Pro Football Scoreboard for this wee. 16 games, 16 stadiums and 8 of the stadiums are named after a corporate sponsor. YUCK!

McAfee Coliseum (Oakland)
Cleveland Browns Stadium
Ralph Wilson Stadium
Georgia Dome
Edward Jones Dome
Heinz Field (Think John Kerry ever called this one the wrong name?)
Giants Stadium
ALLTEL Stadium
Reliant Stadium
Ford Field
Monster Park
Qwest Field
Invesco Field
Texas Stadium
Dolphin Stadium
Lambeau Field (Lambert field according to John Kerry)

I don't know enough about Ralph Wilson or Edward Jones but I really liked the names of some parks before they were renamed because of the all mighty dollar. I know it is a business but can you imagine Lambeau Field or Yankee Stadium or Candlestick (oh wait, we already lost that one) being renamed to James River Paper Products field and NYSE Diamond. UGGGGG!

Merry Christmas to all.

Ralph Wilson is the owner of the Bills, so I guess he's entitled to put his name on it!

Wrigley Field and Busch Stadium were named for the baseball teams owners, but the names are synonymous with their products.

It is the corporate sponsorship of Bowl Games that gets under my skin.

Before it was Ralph Wilson stadium it was Rich Stadium. Rich Products is a company in Buffalo and not knowing for sure but I would guess their sponsership ran out and Ralph chose not to re new it and named it after himself. I remember when the stadium was first being built alot of names were being thrown around. One name I thought it should have been named was Bob Kelso Memorial Stadium. Bob was the only NFL player who was killed in action in the Vietnam War. Remember the stadium was built in c. 1970 and the war was still going on. On another note, all the Bills boosters and many fans thought the stadium should have had a dome. It would have been great, but now 36 years later I think it would have ruined the appeal of teams having to come to Buffalo in January and play playoff games in the cold, snow and swirling winds. It sure is one heck of a home field advantage. Joe

Personally, as most teams are demanding huge public subsidies for their new parks, I think they should be required to sell the naming rights. Why charge the taxpayers $20,000,000 when you can get it from XYZ Corp.
  • I don't like it, but the money involved is unreal. I would prefer the stadium be named for its location, it would be less confusing.

I'll always miss the King County Stadium, or the Kingdome. I never saw my favorite team play there, but I went to Motorhead, Metalica and Guns and Roses there and that building ROCKED, best building for a concert I've been in, although I'm sure some would argue.
