Is it my imagination, or are there a lot more Buffalo Nickel collectors here nowadays?

When I used to post in the coin forum a couple years ago, it seemed like Buffalo Nickel threads were few and far between. Recently, every time I check in here, there are 2 or 3 new threads on the first page. Seems like there are lots of active posters now who love this series as much as I do! image

I've really grown to like buffalo nickels. I currently have a full set with some really nice circs in it. I've been slowly trying to get the top two rows in the first page of my dansco with full crisp horns. I've just got the 13-DT1, 13-PT2, 1915-D, and 1915-S to go. Of those, the 15-S should be the only difficult one. Man, you should see my 13-S T2. It's as fully struck as they come!

Thanks. I shouldnt have a problem hanging on to it. It would probably take a life altering event for me to part with it. (Or a moon money offer so high it would make me question the buyer's sanity.)

  • You rarely see such high releif on the reverse of a 13-S II. I agree that's well-struck for the date/MM.

And , yes, count me in as one of the hard-core Buffalo collectors posting on these boards.

Just posted this ATS, I didn't realize these are common with this clashing. I may start to get more interested.

    JRocco-

If you like clashes, look for the so called "masked Indian" or "Lone Ranger" clashed die varieties. They look like the Indian is wearing a Lone ranger mask and can be found for many different dates.

I'm starting to really get into Buffalo's. The problem lies in my grading skills. I'm afraid to pay waaay over for a coin the dealer says is UNC but it's really a low AU.
WTB: Eric Plunk cards, jersey (signed or unsigned), and autographs. Basically anything related to him

Positive BST: WhiteThunder (x2), Ajaan, onefasttalon, mirabela, Wizard1, cucamongacoin, mccardguy1

    Negative BST: NONE!

Burks- join the club! Even the seasoned veterans will have differing opinions on AU vs BU. A word of advice though, in my experience MOST raw buffs that dealers mark as BU are cleaned AU coins. Just what I have seen anyway.

I would say the main problem lies in determining a weak strike or die fatigue from actual wear. It is not easy to tell, and you will see even slabbed examples that are very inconsistent.

That's one of the reasons the series is so attractive to me, it is a challenge. And with a lot of research, patience, and some good luck, you can still snag some deals and pick some nice varieties. I've done a lot of the research bit and have done very well finding some killer coins and varieties. I'm hoping the luck part doesn't run out on me!

    Cheers-

  • Arm yourself with David Lange's 2nd edition of "The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels". What a great reference!

Get with a dealer that specializes in Buffalo Nickels if you are buying raw...PCGS and ANACS do a good job on certifying those borderline AU-low grade Unc. Buffs most of the time.

I too have recently gotten back into collecting them. I do every winter. My collection ranges from Good to Ms 66.
