Dontrelle Willis arrested for DUI

Marlins two-time All-Star pitcher Dontrelle Willis was arrested and charged with DUI in South Beach early Friday morning, according to police reports.

The 24-year-old, who was married earlier this month, failed a field sobriety test and he refused a Breathalyzer test. The arrest occurred about 4 a.m. ET.

According to police reports, Willis drove up to a South Beach nightclub, got out of his black Bentley and urinated on the street. He got back into his car and was arrested on Washington Avenue close to the Mansion nightclub.

whenever I read about these situations it makes me think why these guys don't either call a cab or hire a driver for the evening...

  • I am sure that there is at least one person on this message board that has received a DUI or been driving while under the influence. I am also sure that somebody on this board has had a friend or family member injured or killed by a drunk driver.

Let us be thankful that nobody was hurt in this situation including Dontrelle.

Dontrelle is a role model for many young kids and he is one hell of a pitcher. He has helped keep baseball in South Florida. He is appreciated by the media and he has signed many autographs when he is off the baseball field. He has all the makings of a long term superstar.

Many athletes have drinking, gambling and sex addiction problems. They are human beings and make mistakes. I am not asking you to give Dontrelle a free pass because he is accused of a DUI. I am simply asking you not to group him with people like Dwight Gooden or any other athlete who has destroyed their career by off the field mistakes.

Let us hope that Dontrelle who is 24 can learn from his mistake and it can make him a better person off the field and a better pitcher on the field.

The Gooden parallel cannot be ignored. We'll see how it turns out over time. It's hard to have a lot of sympathy for these guys though when they screw up. They've got the world by the balls and should know better for sure.

He is a young guy who made a mistake that several if not many of us have made over the years.

Like someone else mentioned, there are some of us who have done it, and many of us who have lost people close to us due to it. This includes myself.

I have lost a couple of very close friends due to drinking and driving, and I have also been guilty of it myself many times years ago, including one time where I was caught in the fall of 2000. It is something I thank God for nearly every day.

In the fall of 2000 I was arrested for a DWI. I had been visiting and spending long hours at the hospital where my gf at the time was staying for an illness. I left the hospital one afternoon to go to her parents and pick up some items for her and bring them back to the hospital where she was at.

While at her parents I had a few drinks with them. Nothing extreme, maybe just 2 or 3. Upon leaving I was asked to stop at a local bar and pick up a family friend of theirs and give him a lift home since it was on my way back to the hospital.

Once I got to the bar I joined their family friend for several more drinks, including several shots and another bunch of beers. By the time an hour had rolled by I had drank way too many to even consider being behind the wheel, but like many of us have done at times, I made the wrong choice and got in the car anyhow.

On the way back to the hospital there was an SUV that was backing out of a driveway without looking, and backed out directly into my path. I clipped the bumper of the SUV with my car...nothing serious, really just a tap. Though normally the accident would have been no fault of mine, due to being WELL past the limit the burden of blame fell directly on me.

I had several friends in law enforcement at the time, and many had given me those PBA cards, which many times in the past worked like a get out of jail free card for me when a situation where I had had too many arose. This time, due to the accident, there was nothing that could be done and I was arrested on the spot after failing my roadside test miserably.

Here is the part which makes me thank God every day...

My father arrived at the jail early the next morning, which was a sunday, to post my bail and pick me up.

He and I always had a very good relationship, but he was from the old school where you didnt really discuss feelings or talk about too many things. Nothing really wrong with it, it was just the way it was.

Well that morning after picking me up we drove around a bit after leaving the courthouse and discussed many things he and I never really talked about or got to say to each other regarding life, our relationship, our feelings, etc.

Less than 8 months later my father passed away.

At his wake it hit my that had it not been for the DWI there I would have been, having lost the most important and influencial person I would ever know in my life without ever having said some of the things many fathers and sons dont get the chance to say to each other.

Way too often we put off saying the important things till its too late. My arrest had given me that chance to say things that needed to be said to him, and enabled me to deal with his death without many of the regrets.

Things in life indeed happen for a reason. My DWI and arrest was a blessing in disguise at the time and something I am very thankful for happening each and every day.

Hopefully Dontrell can find something positive in his situation and change his life for the better because of it.

    Ego?
  • What's sad is that these guys get community service and its brushed under the rug. Some people in society actually look up to sports stars for spending time in jail.

Because of my job, I'm held to a higher standard. I think these sports stars should be held to a higher standard due to the ability they have to influence the younger members of society.

Probably for the same reason tens of thousands of "regular" people get arrested for DUI every year. They think they're capable of driving when they're really not. It doesn't help when alcohol impairs your decision making abilities.

Thanks for sharing a tremendously personal story - probably one of the posts of the year for me!

It's nice that something serendipitous came from such a bad esperience - I also made my "peace" with my dad years ago.

And BTW, I don't know of anyone who hasn't made the mistake of driving when they shouldn't - I feel fortunate - now - to learn from my friends.

Hopefully that same thing will happen for Dontrelle.

    Merry Christmas
