Worth it for newbie?????

    I used to subscribe to the magazine, but it got to the point where I wouldn't even read them. I did however subscribe to their online price guide for one month just to try it out. The advantage of the on-line price guide is that they list every card for each year and not just a select few.

    On the older stuff there is a link that you can click on and it allows you to view the card. That to me was nice feature, however I am not going to subscribe to it. I found by checking the completed auctions on ebay you can get a more accurate market value.

    My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

    The magazine is mostly 2 pages of pre 1980 and 12 pages of 2006 releases. On all the 2006 releases the only arrow you can expect to see is a "down" arrow in a years time. Beckett is good for wrapping fish and lining bird cages..........

    I don't think it's worth it to get the mag subscription. 14-15 years ago, I used to love Beckett because of the hiqh quality covers and each issue was a collectable in itself due to my favorite players being on it, but the content itself rarely changes. These days, the covers are not really different than any other sports rag and the content still sucks or rarely updates. It's just not worth it. In fact, I would wager to say that even the online subscription is not worth it. Maybe buy a month's worth of access once or twice a year to catch up, but definitely not on a monthly basis since the information doesn't change all that often.

    I agree that the best thing to do is just do a one month online subscription and get what you need that way. I used to order about every 3-4 months just to see where things were. Like Bunker said, every card is listed and it's only like $3-4 a month.

    If you feel you need to subscribe to beckett buy the sub off of ebay.

    If you mainly buy vintage, spend the money for the Beckett Almanac or SCD Annual Price Guide - it has comprehensive checklisting and the prices are generally the same as online (i.e., equally inaccurate).

    If you mainly buy new, go for the cheapest option to get the magazine. IMO the information the magazine provides about new sets (other than pricing) is quite valuable. Sure, the Online Price Guide gives prices before the magazine does, but ebay searching will give you more accurate pricing.
